Roy,

Interesting to note that you have mentioned the following medal roll:-

8. The General Service Medal (1918-1964)
Bar Palestine 1945-1948 (27th Sept 1945-30th June 1948) Manch Regt.

I wasn't aware that the Regiment earned that clasp and its not recorded in the BBM book.

Are there many soldiers of the Regiment awarded the clasp or just some perhaps on attachemnt?

Interesting to find out.

regards

Cheers Roy,

Not many at all then.

A hard GSM and clasp combination to find.  I certainly have never seen one and very possibly they dont exist, if the man already held the GSM earned in his previous regiment and this Palestine 1945-48 was just a further clasp entitlement.

Following on from another topic you have answered, what about the TFWM.

Can you provide that list.

I have seen recorded that there are only 9 officers and 60 men of the whole Regiment issued with it, making it the rarest WW1 campaign medal.

It would be really useful research to see which Battalions the men were with, there service numbers and try and work out from that where they went and why to earn it.

hi roy, little help needed,i dont know if you had the rolls when i posted on last year but my grandfather  william rodaway  signed up underage cheshire reg 1915, his medals  he signed for 1920  would have had the cheshire regiment on them this i understand,
he then signed up for the manchesters 1916-17 i  have the 2 medal cards one for each regiment,
would he be on the medal roll for a manchester battalion ? due to him signing on again under age i am sure he would not have given the same address for next of kin,  and as for the army this was a different william rodaway still trying to trace his battalion his number in the mans was 79184,  tony

hi Roy, thanks for looking, could you tell me what  it tells you?  with him not being on your medal rolls does this say he was not in any of those battalion you have?  or was it because his medals were issued with the Cheshire regiment,
cheers tony

You would have to look at the Cheshire or Devon Regt's medal rolls to get the info you are looking for.

For interest here is a little background on the redoubtable Captain Joe Walsh.

Joe enlisted in 2nd Bn Scots Guards under-age at 16. Active service in WWII with 1st Guards Brigade in North Africa.  Captured by the Germans on two occasions and escaped both times. Promoted Sergeant in 1943 and to Officer Cadet Training Unit in Palestine before being commissioned and joining the Ardwicks as they entered action in Italy. Post-war served with the Lancashire Fusiliers in Trieste and later at the Manchester Regiment Depot, Ladysmith Barracks as Training Officer.

His son David was commissioned in the King’s Regiment and became a Lieutenant Colonel. Joe died two years ago on 16 December 2006. He really was a larger than life personality.
