a grand old soldier

pte 1032 Thomas briggs
Thomas enlisted on 21st may 1877 in the 6th royal Lancashire regt at the age of 20,he later joined the 1st manchesters,he saw service in Afghanistan in 1879 and Egypt in 1882,being awarded medals for both those campaignes,thomas saw service in india before returning home.he married his sweetheart martha at st.michaels church,hulme on 6th april 1889,thomas terminated his engagement on 2-6-1893.
when WW1 broke out,thomas who lived at 19 dale st,hulme,re-enlisted on 5th december 1914 as pte 15723,and was posted to the 14th manchesters,he served on home service until his discharge on 12th april 1916,sadly due to the breakdown of his health,he had developed heart problems and senile debility,during his years with the regiment he was described as a good soldier and earned one or two good conduct badges.

sadly thomas passed away at ancoats hospital on 8th march 1918 aged 61,he was afforded war grave status and buried in southern cemetery,manchester,his wife martha was granted 15 shillings a week pension even though thomas had been discharged for two years.
