Hello All !
I'm trying to find something about my uncle the only info I have is a photo of his grave, it reads, "3523889 Pte George Wilfred Greenhalgh 1st Manchester Reg. accidently killed at Moascar 27th Nov 1936". Where's Moascar?.............Egypt?......... Generally I'd like some pointers of were to start with anything, I live in Bolton so a trip to Tameside is no problem.
Thanks, sculptor

There is at least one mention of G W Greenhalgh in Volume ten of the Regimental Gazette.  I will look this up on Monday and  will let you know what it says.

Hi Robert, thanks for that. I've found out that the Moascar war cemetery is near what is now Ismailia about 70 miles east of Cairo. I've tryed finding it on Google Earth.

G W Greenhalgh was a Signaller in the 1st Battalion and an enthusiastic member of his company and the battalion football teams.  He died as the result of a railway accident having been found dead on a level crossing.  No other detail is available but he was presumably hit by a train.
Very sad.

That's similar to the story I've heard before, I must pay a visit to the museum.
Thanks

Hi Sculptor, I have been away for nearly 4 weeks so have only just seen your postings.
Have you read Arthur Lane's book "One God, Too Many Devils"? Your Uncles death is mentioned in the book on pages 24 & 25  It says he was a drummer and the football team goalkeeper, the team had been playing away and following a post match party he was missing when the team boarded the coach, he was found next morning alongside the rail line.  There is a little more in the book.
If you PM me with a direct contact address I will let you have Arthur's email address or you can check out his web site at: http://www.fepow-community.org.uk/arthur_lane/index.htm
My father would have known your uncle he joined the Regiment in 1932 and served in the West Indies, Middle East and Singapore.
Hope this helps.

This should be the Google Earth location for the Moascar War Cemetery.
If you are using the latest version of Google Earth click on the area and use the + & - keys on your key board (with the number keys on the right) to zoom in and out this will prevent the picture tilting as you zoom in.

Hi rafboy,

Just got back from a few days working in Wales and I'm in receipt of Arthur's book and have just read the relevant pages.
After all this time, it's there in black & white, quite sobering. I'm numbed at reading it, it's times like this I wish my mum was here to see it, but if you believe in heaven .........she's met him already!
I intend to contact Arthur and hope to meet him, and then I'll say a good deal more in this forum about the contents of the book.
My Auntie, Wilf's sister, has just come back off holiday and no's nothing of all this. The first thing I need to clarify when I contact Arthur is my uncle is refereed to as Ernie Greenhalgh? but there is to much of a coincidence of what's in the book and the family gosip and another Greenhalgh in the same Batt.
