George Irvine Higginbotham - Possible Help

Hi Everyone,

Im trying to do a bit of work on my Manchester Man - George Irvine Higginbotham (could be spelt slightly differently but the Irvine could give it away). I know definitely that he was in the 1st Manchesters and i believe he was discharged around 1922 in Guernsey. He went to Ireland and then Guernsey but that's pretty much all I know.

He did tell a few tall tales in his lifetime but there was usually a little grounding to his stories. He used to regale us with the story that he Was Champion Shot at BISLEY but for the life of me i can't remember the year -

He was born in 1906 so couldn't have legally joined up till after 1919. Could anyone help me out with any details of his service i would dearly love to know his Service Number etc so i can try get any service records that may still exist..

Hello Tammy, welcome to the forum.
Can you double check his date of birth please, the only George Irvine Higginbotham I can find was born on 14 October 1902.

You are correct George Irvine Higginbotham was in fact born 14th October 1902 (double checked his birth certificate seems i had mixed him up with his brother!!)

Unfortunately, due to the period in which he served, there doesn‘t seem to be any information regarding his military service freely accessable. I suggest your best course of action would be to apply to the MoD for his service record, the necessary forms can be found here

I presume you are his next of kin so all the information you will need is his full name and date of birth.

If he represented the Regiment at Bisley he could well have been mentioned in the Regimental journal. If you are able to visit the Achives of the regiment in Ashton, they may hold copies.

The 1939 register records that he was involved with the ARP.

I will definitely chase this up. Pity he wasn't just a few years earlier and it would have been a little bit easier! Now its a MOD nightmare task lol...

Unfortunately i'm out in Australia so I can't just pop in to the archives its all having to be done by snail mail!

There are a few Higginbottoms and one Higginbotham George (Army Number 3516093) in the Manchester records MR4/6/5/6 1921 Army No 3516011-3517015.
