My mistake, error - 25th November 1914 not 1915. I haven't delved into the practicalities of the explosion. I agree that the air would be acrid and filled with poisons. Pte William James Worsley was reportedly killed through 'Gas Poisoning' on 15th Dec 1915 in a similar incident.

Another mistake I made, your right, he wasn't killed, he was reported 'Wounded' not killed. His service number for the MGC is 49569. All of the territorial men listed in the 15 roll of the MGC have a disenbarkation date as the 05/11/1914 arriving at (3) Egypt. In the Manchester 15 Roll the date 29th Sept 1914 has been changed to 6th May 1915 -  (2b) Gallipoli. I'm presuming he was a draft that left England and arrived before the unit landed in the Dardanelles. Once I've found all those posted out of the unit, the next step is to calculate the dates they enlisted.
