Hello from Australia. Thankyou for the warm welcome, as someone new to family research, it was reassuring  :). I recently found my great grandfather's war record. I am having trouble finding out what exactly he did. On one of his pages it states that he was a POW boy but all I can find about the 3rd is they were a home front Battalion? Also I found a Kings Own badge amongst my father's things. Could this be my great grandfather's? Any insights into my grandfather's war would be very much appreciated. Di

Welcome to the forum Di
Your Great Grandfather served with 161 PoW Company before he served with 154 PoW Coy.
From his service record he was sent on leave to the UK from 161 Coy on 06.07.1919 till 20.07.1919 and then he was posted to 154 Coy on 20.09.1919.
The whereabouts of 154 Coy is given in his record - circled in blue. I can't decipher the place name but it looks to end with ,,elle"

Well done Mack, Souville it is, Verdun is where one would expect PoWs to be employed.

Wow guys! Thankyou so much! My dad always said that no one in our family had fought in any of the wars, so this has been a really interesting week! I couldn't't see those details on the copy that I got from ancestry and I didn't know about his brother. I am wondering if you can recommend a book that would give me some insight into Oldham and/or the Manchester's. Also, if it isn't too much trouble, what are your thoughts on the Kings Own badge that I have? Sorry...I haven't been able to upload a picture. Di

I expect your G Grandfather spent some time at an Infantry Base Depot in France when he was posted to the BEF on 27.11.1918 as he did not join the 1/10th till 04.12.1918. On 15.05.1919 he was posted to the BEF Details Battalion, which I presume was a holding unit for men from different regiments who were to remain in France. Judging by the battalion's name I expect the men were employed on all sorts of different tasks and I guess that this is when he was attached to a PoW Company.

There is a very good history of the 1/10th Bn, ,,Amateur Soldiers - A history of Oldham's Volunteers and Territorials, 1859-1938" by KW Mitchinson, ISBN 0-9518098-9-X. It is possibly now out of print.

As you have access to Ancestry, the Bn War Diary covers the period during which he served with the Bn. As the Bn was in the process of demobilization and had left France by 04.04.1918, the War Diary is mainly concerned with the daily routine and how many men had returned to the UK.

As your G Grandfather didn't, as far as one can tell, serve with the King's Own, it could well be just a souvenier.
