Pte Lloyd (Born Q4 1868) enlisted on 25/1/1915 and served at Home with 8th Bttn. He was discharged sick with SWB on 21/7/1916, aged 45. His Pension was provided for ‘Debility’ aggravated by service. TB noted in review on 21/2/1917. Admitted to Baguley Sanatorium. 21/3/1917 Western General Hosp reported TB aggravated by ordinary Military Service.
William died from Pulmonary TB on 19/2/1920, aged 51. Reg Chorlton Q1 1920 8c/911. He was buried in Manchester Ardwick Cemetery on 24/2/1920. Grave No 5199 E.
William’s widow Julia Ellen, 33 Milton St, W Gorton received a Pension Grant. Daughter Lillian. William had been a Painter.
William was born in Openshaw in Q4 1868. He was the son of John Rogers and Jane Lloyd. William joined the Amalgamated Society Of Carpenters & Joiners Union in 1885 and was still a member in 1901. He originally enlisted in 4th Battalion Manchester Regiment, 1742, on23/2/1886, aged 18 year and 1 month. William then served 12 years in the South Staffordshire Regiment - 2162, enlisting on 2/10/1888. This included operations in Zululand in 1888, when he was wounded. William also fought in the Boer War with service in Mauritius and Malta. He had extensive medical records and numerous periods in hospital. William was transferred to Reserve in 1894 and discharged on 29/9/1898.
He married Julia Ellen Jukes in July 1897. The couple lived at 47 Gibson St, Ardwick in 1898. In 1901 William and Julia lived at 35 Bury St, Gorton and William was employed as a House Painter. By 1911, they had moved to 27 George St, Northenden and William had the same employment. The couple’s daughter, Lillian was born on 16/6/1912.
