Hello All,

I wonder if some kind person could help me or point me in the right direction to finding which Division my relative served in and his engagment in Europe?  I have his medal card.
                                    Name                  Corps     Rank         Regt. No
In dark blue ink    Thomas Mooney     S.lancs      Ptc           657

In light blue ink                               Manch R                   61368

He was residing in St Helens, Lancs and he joined up sometime in 1914. His theatre of War is Number 1 and date of entry 19/9/15 also on medal card under remarks it says Class Z. 11/1/19.

Alex.

Thank you for that information, mack  :)

How do I find out, where in France he engaged in the theatre of War? Why would he first be in the South Lancs Regiment then the Manchesters?

i'm afraid we don't have the details for the South Lancs, you could try the Great War Forum http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

without his service records we can only guess but i imagine he would have been wounded or sick and then transferred on his recovery to the Manchesters

Thanks harribobs :)

Through this very informative forum, his MIC card and other sites. I think this is what might happened.

Thomas Mooney Pte 657, joined the South Lancs( Prince of Wales volunteers at the outbreak of war in 1914. After the heavy casuality losses, he was transfered to the Manchesters No 61368. He went to France (theatre of war- no1) on 19.9 1915.

Under medal. roll and page.

Victory JG?/104 B27 or 1327 page 5525  (104 being Manchesters)
British   ditto
14 Star Supp J/1/56  page 2 under remarks and parallel to star is written  Retd? (1743.K R)5141----?

Class Z 11.1.19.

It is difficult to make out some of the script so apologize for blanks and question marks. Am I going down thr right route to finding out wherein France he fought?

Thank you once again,

Alex

i think he would have gone to france with the SLs, for only one reason that his service number with the manchesters is a mid to late war one

His medals were issue by the Shrewsbury records offices.

The letter was a "J"  104 is the Royal Welsh Fusiliers:

The Manchester Regt is also 104 but from the "H" offices Preston. We don't have the medal rolls for Shrewsbury.
