Captain H.H.Nidd MC: 7th Bn. Manchester Regiment

This officer apparently died in March 1919 consequent upon his service during the Great War.   I have not been able to find anything about him and wonder where he was buried. PhilipG.

The LG has the following entries for Herbert Henry Nidd:
Commissioned into 7th Bn from the 1st City Bn as Lt ( not 2/Lt as stated in the link), 26.11.1914.
Acting Capt while commanding a company 07.10.1916
Captain 12.02.1917
MC 26.07.1918
Relinquished Commission due to ill health caused by wounds 01.01.1919

He is, according to the link, buried in the family plot in Willow Grove Cemetery

It seems very sad that this Warehouseman & Clerks Orphans' School Old Boy has no CWGC commemoration, even though he died so soon after retiring. His death certificate records cause of death as acute endocarditis and epileptiform convulsions. This case has been assessed for commemoration by members of IFCP and I assume there was insufficient evidence to conclude death was related to service.

Agreed.   It seems sad that the Authorities acted so strangely.    I had a similar experience in 2016 which was only rectified by the kind intervention of my Member of Parliament and the interest of the Director General of the CWGC herself.   PhilipG.

in 1919 his doctor wrote to the CWGC stating that captain nidd had contracted dysentery at Gallipoli and suffered from a heart complaint which was greatly aggravated by his service but they refused him a commemoration

hi all   

we did locate his grave in willow grove cemetery reddish many years ago after being in touch with john hartley on the great war forum. i think this may have been back in the days of the infancy of mobile phones so will have to see if the pictures are still anywhere.  his name was placed on cheadle hulmes war memorial as his grandmother and himself after his war service lived on cheadle road. he had a small white cross on the plot as well as the family stone but both had fallen down. willow grove is much improved now and its one of my remits as a cwgc volunteer.  i will try too relocate his grave next time i am up there

Herbert Nidd's life was clearly curtailed by his army service.  CWGC has strict rules of evidence where we will need to prove conditions of endocarditis or epilepsy duirng service.  If anyone has a chance to visit a copy of his service file would be great on photos.  Its most likely the particular conditions weren't diagnosed even though they were probably present. IFCP has now put forward Herbert Nidd's case forward for commemoration as he died from endocarditis commencing in service.  Herbert's case was put forward by John Hartley many years ago.  The change in criteria should see him receiving recognition as a War Grave.

apologies for my late reply.

this is really good news for Captain Nidd. I dont seem to have noted the plot number in my haste to find the grave and the days before decent mobile phones. from my description on GWF and my visits as a volunteer for CWGC it must be in the back 2 plots as its 3 rows from the collapse at the rear of the cemetery.

im happy to visit the office this week to access the burial register for willow grove or to go to Stockport library to look at the digital copy and get the plot number for you
