Don‘t give up! There are links on Ancestry to a Lt G Simpson Manchester Regt in the Army Lists for 1940-41-42-43-44. unfortunately Ancestry then links to Fold Three to view them. If they are on Fold Three the entries are also in the free to view Army Lists elsewhere, its just a case of finding the entries.

I think this is his promotion to Lt https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/34911/supplement/4735

Cat as Charlie says don't give up yet.
You could also try contacting the Manchester Regiment Archive.
The address, phone number and an email link are here:

I‘m just wondering in the light of what Sphinx has said regarding his medal and his Commission in 1940 if he had served in India in the ranks with another regiment. The Officers numbers in the LG are running consecutively and would seem to indicate an arbitary allocation of regiment. Do you have a photos of him in uniform in India which show a cap badge?

I think I have found him in the India General Service Medal roll for the 2nd Bn as 3521920 Pte G Simpson

Welcome to the forum

This may be of help

SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 15 APRIL, 1949

Manchester Regiment. Lt. (now Hon. Capt.) G. SIMPSON (140025) (3rd Sept. 1940).

I'm not saying it's him but there can't be many Capt G Simpsons in the Manchester's.

The number may help to get his service records.

Good luck with your research

Thanks so much, I will order the certificate tomorrow and see what info comes from that, I'll also check through the many photos to see if there are any of him in uniform.

charlie

Interestingly the LG entry which Timberman refers to is for the award of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/38586/supplement/1889
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/38586/supplement/1890

As can be seen from the LG he qualified for the award on 03.07.1940, as the qualifying period at the time was 18 years, this would indicate an enlistment date of 04.07.1922. At the time the medal could only be awarded to an Officer if he had served a certain length of time in the ranks.

His Military History Sheet records:

Wow, thanks for all the information. I have ordered the certificate today so it should be here next week.

I have retrieved the old photos from the loft this evening and had a quick look through. Regrettably I don't think there is one in 'formal' uniform. Some photos have info written on the back but others don't. They seem to be mostly from India but there are a small batch from Palestine, One says 'arrival of 1st Bn in Haifa, Palestine, 24 Feb 1936.

There's one picture of a regimental goat in a beautiful 'coat' which has what I assume is the regiments badge on it. It's just a small photo so I need to scan it to see if it can be enlarged to reveal any more detail.

Thanks again for all your help and info.

I think the medal ribbon is a GSM and not an IGS.

The medal ribbon could be the General Service Medal for Palestine then.

GSM with Palestine clasp.
His service number would be engraved around the rim.

Thanks Cliff, I don't have any of his medals but have just found further medals for his father, Albert, 1914 - 1918 and a South Africa one with 5 bars. Can anyone tell me what these would be made from and what can I clean them with?
