Hello I’m wondering if someone might be able to help me?

The photos below are of a medallion I found in amongst my mothers effects after she passed away.  I understand that it belonged to my great grandfather who along with my great grandmother immigrated to Australia, we believe in 1914.  He passed away sometime in the early 20s and my great grandmother remarried so knowledge of him was lost. Anyway the medallion has me intrigued enough to want to know a little more.

On the obverse side central under a “lion”? is the word Egypt.  Under the lion is the Moto 'Defence not Defiance' followed by the regimental details for A Coy, 7th (T) Manchester. The reverse side of the medal says that it was awarded to PTE H Brown (Harold??) for the Lynd Cup - 1909. Would someone have some knowledge of the 'Lynd Cup' and if the recipient's service record is still available?

cheers

Welcome to the forum Andrew,
Are you unsure that your G Grandfather’s forename was Harold? or have I misunderstood the question marks. It would help if you could supply a bit more information regarding him.

Are you aware of the National Archives of Australia site? http://www.naa.gov.au
I had  a quick look but I was unable to find a Harold Brown arriving in Australia in 1914.

Andrew,

William Alfred LYNDE was commissioned into what was the 40th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps (3rd Manchester) on 13.3.1871 as Captain
Promoted to Major on 14.3.1877.
In 1880 it became the 16th Lancashire RVC (3rd Manchester) and on 12.1.1881 he was promoted to Lt. Colonel and commanded them.
Subsequently becoming the 4th Volunteer Battalion the Manchester Regiment in 1888 he retired and was appointed Honorary Colonel on 4.5.1891.

The 4th Vb became the 7th (Territorial Force) Bn in 1908.

As was the way with most officers, particularly those commanding, they commissioned lots of competitions for shooting, sports and drill in their name and awarded prizes such as Rifles, Cups, spoons and medallions to the winners and participants.

Your relatives medals is one of these.

Hi sphinx,

Fabulous thank you.  Next question is.. is there a chance of working out what the award was for?? I'm feeling from the research online that I've done the answer will be no but I have to ask....

Also I'd be interested in understanding the uniform and accoutrements a soldier in the 7th (T) may have worn. Is there somewhere you could point me?  I've had a long standing interest in the Australian Light Horse (1914-1918) and also years of service in the Australian Army so I can't help but want to know :-)

cheers

Hi Charlie,

Yes I've been trying to find more information on him without too much success so far.  From all I know his name is definitely Harold Brown. I got that from his marriage certificate. Today my sister passed a document to me which has him on the TSS Borda - London to Sydney 17 Sep 1914. I've searched some passenger lists without luck so far.  The only other things I know is that his DOB is most likely 1886, Married 8 Apr 1913 at All Saints church Gorton (west), I believe he may have been part of a band, maybe work related, which must have been public transport oriented as his occupation is listed as a 'car driver' and I have seen a picture of him which looks like he was acting as a conductor on a 'bus' early 1900's style. But apart form that I have no other information relating to his service.

cheers

Andrew
