I am leading a project to renovate and repair the War Memorial Lychgate between St Peter's Church and the A6 (Stockport Road) in Levenshulme. This is so that it can be used as a focus for the 100th anniversary commemoration of the end of the 1st World War.

The list of names can be found at: http://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/10717

A plaque inside the church in memory of members of the Church Lads Brigade (ST PETER'S COMPANY NO. 2241 MANCHESTER REGIMENT) includes names also in the War Memorial Lychgate, suggesting that the names inside the lychgate are also from the Manchester Regiment.

I WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR SUPPORT FOR THE REPAIR & RENOVATION PROJECT IN THE FORM OF:

1. e-mails of support (sent to petergibson (at)  doctors.org.uk)  so that these can be included with grant applications from: Replace (at) with @
a) the Manchester Regiment Association (if this is possible).
b) individuals associated with the Manchester Regiment Association.

These are important in deciding who is given a grant. Please could these be e-mailed to petergibson(at)doctors.org.uk
Replace (at) with @

2. Consideration of possible financial support from the Regiment or individuals (which I now believe is called the King's Regiment). I have applied to the War Memorials Trust (who may be willing to provide up to 75% of the cost) and the Landfill Communities Fund (which requires that 10% is obtained from a third source). The total cost is likely to be £26,382.

Hi Wendi

VAT NOW ADDED TO POST to give total of £26,381.45 - updated 16/12/2017. Apologies for previous omission.

Thanks for your reply.

Work required and costs from favoured quote (out of 7 quotes received) shown below.

Please let me know if you require a copy of the detailed quote.

War Memorial Lychgate
Summary Schedule
Mono Masonry

TEMPORARY ACCESS, PROTECTION AND REMOVALS £2,250 + VAT = £2,700
Includes platform to access the lychgate roof, barriers, protecting nearby grass etc. and removing rubbish.

EXTERNAL WORK TO ALL ELEVATIONS £6,415+ VAT = £7,698
Memorial plaques (with names) â€" remove, repair, re-fix.
-   Includes polishing (to remove graffiti, gold leaf guilding of letters, lacquer covering to protect
-   Polycarbonate scratch-proof cover
Stonework and mortar - needs significant work doing.

JOINERY £2,050 + VAT = £2,460
Replacement of ceiling boards and some rafters

ROOF WORKS £4,669.54 + VAT = £5,603.45
Includes replacing batons, slates & guttering etc.

DECORATIONS WORKS £500 + VAT = £600
Painting of woodwork

ELECTRICAL WORKS £2,500+ VAT = £3,000
Lighting for internal light and bollards along path.
Bollards along path may not be included in final plan, but internal light & cabling still required. However, I have been advised to keep this cost in as there is likely to be an increase in total cost if the work is delayed for a few months (as seems likely).

PROVISIONAL SUMS £1,500+ VAT = £1,800
In case extra work is needed for electrical circuit to lychgate or other unforeseen work.

PRELIMINARIES £2,100+ VAT = £2,520
“Allow for General preliminaries costs for 6 weeks period at £ 350 per week.”
Probably preparatory work.

Thanks

Peter

Hi Wendi

Funding for VAT may not be necessary.

I have discovered (via the War Memorials Trust) that we will probably be able to reclaim the VAT (via the Memorial Grant Scheme) after the work is completed and we have received an invoice from the contractor.

I hope you had a good Christmas and have an enjoyable new year.

Hi Wendi

I wondered if it would be possible to have an e-mail of support from the Manchester Regiment Assocation to help with our funding applications?

If our funding applications are successful, we would expect to have sufficient funding for the project.

Thanks

Peter

Hi George

Thanks for your quick reply.

There are at least 19 names for the Manchester Regiment, because their names are also on a memorial inside the church.

A photograph of (and more information about) the memorial inside the church can be found at:

https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/248039/

I am afraid that I have no information about the OLD Association.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter. I have no connection with The Manchester Regiment Association, therefore I am unable to comment.

Thanks for that info Neil - I often wondered where/or what happened to the OLD "MALTA MAFIA CREW" and now seemingly they have disappeared around  about  2007 - possibly along with the Closure of Ardwick Barracks and shortly after Fulwood Barracks.

Hi Timberman, Wendi and George

Thanks for this information which is very helpful.

I had assumed that the Manchester Regiment Forum was run by the Manchester Regiment Association - but I seem to be 10 years out of date.

Thanks

Peter

Your welcome George.

Sad but like most things time moves on, been looking at some old
air bases I spent many happy hours as a child and adult to find they
are just left to rot or made into industrial sites.
Same with many Associations and welfare clubs they just disappear.

hiya peter.
I live in levenshulme[born+bred]your church warden john carrolls parents were very close friends of my parents,i have known john most of my life.
I didn't realise how bad our memorial was,its had quite a hammering by the local toerags.

regarding the memorial in the church to the boys brigade.only five of them fell serving with the Manchester regiment

the lychgate memorial commemorates 182 men who died, the saddest part of this memorial isn't the vandalism, thats easily repaired, what is sad is that there are over 400 men missing from this memorial[over 600 fell]

Hi Mack

Thanks for your reply. Interested to hear that you know John Carroll - I may see him this morning at church (for "Drop In").

A former rector mentioned that nearly 700 men from Levenshulme died in the 1st WW. Do you know why only 182 of them are named on the memorial?

(Incidentally, there is also a list of names at St Mark's Church memorial chapel, but not 600 names).

There is some vandalism to the name plaques, but the other damage is largely due to water damage and time. We plan to give the name plaques a protective covering.

If you ever want to come and have a look at the Boys Brigade memorial inside the church, let me know. We are always open on a Sunday morning from approx. 10.30 (for the church service - when John is likely to be there) and on a Thursday from 10am - 12pm.

Thanks

Peter
