12th battalion

Hi, just back from visiting great grandfather’s grave at Cite Bonjean, Armentières. Private Daniel Barry 5382, we took his medals and laid a wreath.would love any photos of the 12th or even him, we have nothing other than his medals and scroll. Many thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.   I note that his name is included in the Roll of Honour in the 12th battalion's History edited by Robert Bonner and published in 1994.  PhilipG.

No doubt the WW2 set of medals displayed has a connection with the brave soldier whose grave headstone appears in the photograph. PhilipG.

Well spotted! They are his son’s medals, my mum’s Dad who thankfully survived the war.  Thought it added further to our gesture.

Pte Barry arrived in France on 16.07.1915, which would make him one of the original members of the Battalion.
The battalion War Diary has the following entry for the day he died:

„Throughout the day, the enemy maintained an intermittent bombardment of the area about EDMEADS FARM and the communication trenches.
11.30 - 2.0pm Many heavy shells were dropped into HOUPLINES, a very high proportion of these were blind.“

Probably your best bet for a photo are the archives of the Manchester Evening News which are held at Manchester central library.

"It is just possible there may be an obituary in The Manchester Evening news. Searchable on line at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/.../1916-12-31... Good luck! If not you could join themanchesters.org forum and ask there."

"Darren don't search on the exact date of his death, you must remember news moved snail pace back then, not like today! I would expect to see the report about 2 weeks after his death, so start searching from close to his death date, but at least for a month after if not slightly longer! Research requires 'dogged determination'  😊 We will remember them."

i believe daniels name is on the st.clements church memorial at ordsall,i think there was something in the Manchester evening news in may 1916.
