Hello,

We are trying to trace the owner/family of a WW1 medal which we have in our possession.  We have searched the internet and can find nothing.  The medal is a little worn but around the edge we have been able to establish the following facts:
Pte W E Cheyne
Manchester Regiment
43487

We have also contacted Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Tim Bell

William Ewart Cheyne born Q3 1894. Lived at 11 Delamere Road, Levenshulme in 1911, with parents and 5 younger siblings.  Married Maud Travis in Q2 1920 in Chorlton. Served Overseas in 21st Manchesters.  The number is part of a sequence allocated in September 1916 (ish).  He probably joined a different Battalion / Regiment before going overseas.
There are quite a few family trees on Ancestry if you want to contact family members.  Your library will give free access if you don't have it. His brother Frank Luckhurst Cheyne was killed in Egypt/Palestine on 2/11/1917 serving with Royal Scots. Buried in Gaza with my Grandad's cousin Herbert.
