NCO Cap Found in Australia

Hi team,

One topic that very little is known about or written about (as a whole) is the number of British Army regiments that served on convict / garrison duties in Australia. I recently came across a cap I believe belonged to a solider from the 96th. In my internet research I came across one photo of a group of NCO's from the 96th posing for a photo. A number of them were wearing a similar cap. I cant for the life of me find that photo again. Anyway what are everyones thoughts on this item?I can see a makers mark of R.B. & Co. on the liner. The quality is outstanding.

I am afraid what you have is NOT an original piece.

Firstly the 96th at no point wore a red band on any headdress.  This was reserved for Royal regiments which the 96th never has been.

Secondly that badge never existed and therefore was never worn by anyone in the 96th.  In my opinion from the photos it is the crown and centre piece from one of the many reproduction/fake 96th Glengarry badges that abound on Ebay and TradeMe with the outer garter cut away.

lastly as for your statement of "outstanding quality" it is of extremely amateur quality, even home made and certaiinly not of the standard that would have been manufactured by the military in the reign of Queen Victoria.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and hope you didnt pay to much for it.

seems.
