I came across the names of a few professional footballers who died in the Great War.   :-

41370 Pte Edwin Bardsley  2nd battalion.  Kia 18.11.1916.   Thiepval Memorial.   Played for Stockport County.

24744 Pte Patrick McGuire  17th battalion. Kia 12.10.1916.            Do.                Played for Manchester City.

11710  L/Sgt. Jack George Yuill  19th Bn.  Kia   9.7.1916.              Do.                             Do.

2212   Pte Thomas Christopher Porter 1/6th Bn. Kia 4.6.1915  Helles Memorial     Played for Stockport County.

17166 Cpl  H.C.Meadowcroft       20th Bn.  Kia  1.7.1916         Dantzig Alley
Brit. Cem. Mametz  Played for Bury.

79012  Sgt.E.Hodgson                52nd Bn.  Died 4.8.1919       Burnley Cemetery   Played for Burnley

No doubt there are others who served in the Manchesters under the above heading and Manchesters who survived the war.   PhilipG.

I note that reference is made elsewhere on this forum (Football at Gallipoli) to the following:-

1521 Sgt F.Bamber & 2382 Sgt H.Pearson.

They are described as "famous footballers".  Were they professional players at one time?   PhilipG.

Neither Pte Levis nor Pte Wall are recorded as having known graves.   Private Levis is commemorated on the the Thiepval Memorial, whilst Private Wall's name is inscribed on one of the panels of the Tyne Cot Memorial.

The printout of the CWGC in connection with Pte Wall I found most interesting, particularly regarding "Additional Information".  Here it prints the details concerning where the soldier's parents were living in Boldon Colliery.   There is a hint of caring by the Colliery owners, for Wall's parents home address was 7, Aged Miners Cottages, Boldon Colliery, Co. Durham.    I see that Private Wall's widow married again to still reside in Boldon Colliery.

The mine was closed in 1982 and it would appear that traces of the Colliery workings have disappeared and the region is now a sought after area in which to live.  PhilipG.

Pat McGuire also played for Manchester United reserves as well as Hurst and was later at Grimsby Town whilst undertaking military training around Cleethorpes in 1915.

Also 28819 Harry Reynolds, a noted sprinter who played for Manchester United reserves in 1909 and was killed on 1st July 1916 whilst serving in the 20th Battalion.

Cheers

Mark,

Welcome to the Forum and thank you, too, for the information.   Such sadness.  PhilipG.
