Sgt James (Seamus) Askew
« on: May 16, 2008, 02:58:19 PM »
Hello,
I have just come across this forum and wondered if any member knew my Father - Sgt. 23205031 Seamus Askew.  He joined the Manchester Regiment from the Irish Guards in approx 1955/56.he died at Brentwood Essex on 10th April 1958, within days of the merger of the Manchesters with the Kings Liverpool.  He is buried in Phillips Park cemetery.  I recently printed off a certificate from the Armed Forces Memorial website where he is listed in the Rolls of Honour having died in service.
Grateful for any replies.

Regards
Tel

Hi Tel and welcome
I’m sure someone will be able to help. I had a noisy around and only found the bit you did on the Ivor’s Forces Website about your Father. It’s well worth a visit.

Hi,
Just came across a photograph of Sgt Askew in a book published by the Manchester Evening News in 1988 titled 'Manchester since 1900' Please click on this link to view: http://www.tel-web.co.uk/pic/mcrreg1.jpg you may be in the group.  I think it was taken in 1956/57 near Rudyard Lake Staff.  Sgt Askew is back row on the right.

The photograph  shows a platoon of recruits from Ladysmith Barracks on their 'Continuation Training' at Leek, Staffordshire. 10 June - 20 July 1957.

Rudyard Lake would seem to fit the bill very nicely.
