Dear Sirs, Ladies & Gentlemen

Thank you for allowing me to join The Manchester Regiment forum. I am doing some research into my family who served with the Manchester Regiment during the First Work War. I was born in 162 Victoria St, Chadderton, Oldham opposite the Manor Mill my Grandmas old house and spent hours playing soldier, I joined The LG HCR and served 7 years both armoured and ceremonial.

Im looking for information on:
J. Taylor - 34791 Manchester Regiment / 368430 Labour Corps - I have his British War Medal only.
Arthur Bocking - Uncle Arthur was wounded in Gallipoli and blinded by a gunshot wound to his head, I use to visit him when he lived in Morecombe in the 1970s

I now live in Surrey and also doing some research into the Manchester Regiment and them stationed in Aldershot and in particular the home service uniform. I would be grateful for any information on the home service uniforms.

Yours sincerely

Chris

Thank you very much. Attached is Uncle Arthur & Auntie Clara.

Could you please advise onto which section of the forum I should start a thread regarding:

1880 - 1910 Uniforms Privates, NCO - Ireland / Aldershot
I have cast in white metal A Company of 1:32 scale model soldiers. Before I paint them I am researching the correct order of dress in Home Service / Parade uniforn.

I have the plans and elevation drawings for the barracks & parade square in Tipperary which would be an epic build but Im looking for plan drawings for Ashton Barracks, I know they were similar to the LF barracks in Bury and built around the same time. I have access to a laser cutter and 3mm modelling ply which to build a scale model.

I also cannot get a definitive guide to the number of soldiers in a section, platoon, company. I have assumed a section comprises of 12 men lead by an NCO, 4 sections in a platoon lead by a sergeant and officer. A total of 50 men.

J Taylor 34791

Thank you again for your help & comments.

Chris

Chris,
There are some colour postcards of soldiers in the era you are researching in the "pictures of the Manchesters from around the web" section.

These plans at Tameside archives may be of use to you:

A possibility for James Henry is 16266 Pte James Henry Bocking, Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regt, later 388585 Labour Corps.

From KW Mitchinson's book "Amateur Soldiers - a history of Oldham's Volunteers and Territorials 1859-1938"

"In 1962 advertisments were placed in several northern newspapers inviting former members of the Lancashire Fusiliers, East Lancashire, 10/Manchester and East Lancashire Field Ambulance to apply for a small benevolence. A bequest had been made by the late Captain GB Jameson, who had served with the 42nd Division, for Other Ranks who had been on Gallipoli with the Division. Those former members of the 10th who responded are listed below"
among them is L/Cpl Bocking John Arthur.

All I can add re Joshua Taylor is that he did not serve overseas before 01.01.1916

Hi Chris

With regard to Joshua Taylor

There are MICs for 2 Joshua Taylor's who served in The Manch in WW1 the "other one" was 17237 Joshua Taylor whose Date of Entry to France is 9th September 1915

Searching Pension records I came across a Joshua Taylor 9083 who signed up to 2nd City Bn on 24th September 1914 at the age of 16 years and 9 months.  He was the son of Lois and Wilson Taylor of 1, The Green, Whitefield.  He was discharged on 31st October 1914 for "having enlisted under the age of 18"

By my calculations that would make him 18 years old around December/January 1916

a battalion would be approx 1,000 men, made up of four companies plus HQ company. each company approx 200 men, made up of four platoons, each platoon made up of four sections

Thanks Harribobs and you once told me that:-

A Section consists of 15 men
Platoon = 60/65
Company = 240/260
Battalion = 1,000
Brigade = 4,088
Division = 18,675
Corps = 56,025
Army = 224,100
