Harry Jackson, First World War, Ashton-Under-Lyne
« on: December 13, 2016, 11:30:56 PM »
Hello, I'm researching my family history and am trying to get some information and documentation about my Grandfather, Harry Jackson, who lived at 285 Whiteacre Road, Hurst, Ashton Under Lyne. His recorded date of birth is 28th April 1896. He was my maternal grandfather and lived with us (I was a child) in Poole, Dorset, from mid 1930s until his death in 1976. He had some medals which were kept in a drawer but they were given away.
The only record of a Harry Jackson whose details appear to be similar on Ancestry & Find My Past are for a Harry Jackson who is older and lived at 245 Whiteacre Road. Surprisingly, there were two Harry Jacksons living in the road who entered the military but the one whose details I can find at 245 Whiteacre Road is not my grandfather.
There appear to be no signing up papers or a medal record in the online archives for my grandfather, it's as if it never happened.
Stories from my parents are that he was on the battlefield and his horse fell on him, one of his duties was to ferry materials and supplies to the front lines and that he was gassed on one occasion.
I am assuming, or investigating firstly, that he signed up for the 1st World War locally in Ashton as he was working in the cotton mills, as were the rest of his family, and they didn't move out of the area until the 1930s when he came for work to Dorset with his wife and daughter. I have no details of any battles or operations that he was involved in.
I am sorry that the information is vague but it's not for the want of searching so I would be very grateful for any pointers that you could give.  Thanks in advance Tim McClellan

Henry (often called Harry)
H.

Hello Tim, welcome to the forum.

Have you any evidence that he served with the Manchester Regt, or are you assuming he did because he lived in Ashton? There are about 370 Medal index cards for a Harry Jackson, 14 of these are Manchester Regt.

Have you looked for an absent voters list for 1918 -I'm not sure there is one for Ashton - it may give his Regiment.

Have a look at the 1911 census and check that 245 Whiteacre Rd is not a mistake on Ancestry.

Charlie

Hi Tim,

From the description of horses and supplies, I'd suggest you also consider the Army Service Corps as a good bet.
Cheers

Hello, thank you all for your very helpful comments. Thanks Tim, only going on what I've been told so the Army Service Corps will certainly be one for me to chase up. Charlie, I'm only assuming the Manchester Regiment as a possibility as I am very much a beginner on military matters and have absence of other concrete facts. Certainly, I'll investigate the absent voters list, if it's there for Ashton. I've checked the address and there is definitely a separate/different Harry Jackson at 245 Whiteacre Road. He's older too. My Harry Jackson is recorded at 280 Whiteacre Rd in 1911 census. Thanks too, Sphinx. His birth, marriage and death certificates and census entries are all Harry, it had crossed my mind about Henry or Harold but that wasn't his recorded and registered name. I'll check it out though.
I'm very grateful to you all for your time and thoughts and I'll pursue the very helpful suggestions. Best wishes, Tim McClellan
