Hello.I'm new to the list and I'm hoping that at long last I'll discover where my
Grandad was stationed in Ireland.Family lore has it that he met Grandma over
there in either Tipperary or Galway and he brought her to Manchester where
they were married in 1894.
I have a copy of A Short Service Attestation (Duplicate)of James Holliday 2283
Manchester Regiment Ashton under Lyne 13th August 1888
On his Military History Sheet his depot is home 1888 to 1900 11 years 240 days
S Africa1900 to 1901 1year 149 days.He was in 1st battalion
I do hope some knowing soul can tell me whereabouts he was stationed.
Kind regards
Marje

Hello Marje. Welcome to the site. What a good bit of info you have there! Someone will try there best to help you. You will get a response as soon as the experts are online. I can imagine that will help solve where abouts in Ireland, Grandma is from?

hi marje

and welcome

we'd love to see the form, you can attach it using the additional options under the reply box

the 1st battalion was in Tipperary from 1888 to 1891, then the HQ was moved to Kinsale, with two companies at Fort Camden. they left Ireland in 1894 from Queenstown

cheers

Many thanks Chris,
That's brilliant,it's really narrowed the search for Grandma to
one county.
I'm afraid I can't attach the forms (there are 4),no printer.However,I'm quite
happy to get them photo copied and snail mail them to you.
Thanks for your prompt assistance it is most appreciated.

Hi again marje, its a great feeling isn't it. I love when that little titbit of info comes through. Hopefully it will open the door to your past and your heritage. Names of towns and villages. You could now be looking for births with grandma in mind. A couple of areas to work with. If you are not on rootschat.com its worth signing up. Like us on here a great crowd! (modest as well  :)) and always ready to help. The good thing they have all the various locations as you will see. If you figured they nmarried in 1894 then look the marriage cert for maiden name. Then if you work that she was approx 20 ask for help on look ups on roots. You will be away. Do you have the marrage certificate?
I do go on a bit, sorry.
best wishes

These were the only marriages that showed up for the year. Salford is referred to as Manchester sometimes. Do you know if its one of these ladies? Kathleen or Catherine?
These were the only manchester area ones on Freebmd.

Hello Tisgrannie
Thanks for your generous help but I do have James and Kathleen's marriage cert.I should have been more clear about that. They were
married at the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury higher Broughton.
What I can't understand, james's occupation is recorded as Brewers labourer,I
would have thought it would have been soldier.
Kind regards

Your Grandad would have done 5 years with the Regiment, being discharged in 1893, hence his new occupation, but remained in the reserve for the next 7 years, hence being recalled to the Colours at the outbreak of the Boer War.

marje

Thank you Sphinx for clearing up something that has puzzled me for quite some
time,it is much appreciated.
