Hi everyone,
Terry from New Zealand, collector and hobby researcher of the New Zealand Wars 1845 -47 and 1860-72.  Currently writing a book on the "NZ Medals issued to Imperial Regiments and Corps", so I've joined this forum to see what information I can dig up on any 96th Regt. NZ Medals, etc. in existence, as you will all know served over here in 1841-47.

Hi Terry, welcome to the forum. I hope we can help.

If you've already visited the 96th Regiment 1759 - 1881 section you may have noticed that some of the posts were missing. I've fixed this now so there is a little more info. Link below:

Terry,

My records show that the 96th Foot received 27 NZ Medals including 3 for officers.

It was authorised under G.O. No.17 dated Horse Guards 1.3.1869 and was issued to SURVIVORS only.

The medal is dated 1845 - 1846.

I know of only 4 medals ever seen.

Thanks Pete, I will have another look through these.

Hi Spinx,

I would be interested in the names you have recorded; I've combined both the 'Morgan' and Coutts' lists and the total figures are: 2 Officers and 25 men, 2 medals are recorded in the returned medal roll and I have listed 2 medals spotted as existing which are not in these rolls bringing the total 'known' medals to 7.  Also I would be interested if you have any examples of dating.

Thanks

Hello,

The 3 officers I have are as follows:-

Captain W.H. EYTON

Ensign C.D.EARDLEY-WILMOTT
Ensign C.E. WILMOTT

The similarity in the names of the 2 Ensigns does raise the doubt that they are actually one and the same person and just recorded incorrectly at some point in time.

Hi,

A buddy of mine is writing a book on Imperial Officers who served in New Zealand prior to 1900, he provided me this version of the full name and spelling:

Ensign Charles Octavius Eardley Wilmot

A question for everyone - Has anyone downloaded the entire Muster/Pay Rolls of the 96th while serving in New Zealand (most probably contained within the Australian service period)? Thanks

Terry
