Seeking relatives of G Chalkley Japanese POW 1942-1945
« on: July 16, 2016, 06:11:37 AM »
Hello,

This is Ching-ching. I post this for my friend Bessie.

Bessie's dad passed away in Taiwan. Her dad was a Japanese POW from 1942-1945. At the time, Taiwan was Japan’s oversea colony, and many POWs were sent to this island. After the war ended, her mum got a letter from a G Chalkley. Mr. Chalkey was also a POW and was with her dad, Henry, for three years. They both belonged to 1ST/5TH SHERWOOD FORESTERS. The address on the letter was “2 Blackthorne Drive, Chingford E4” in 1945. Mr. Chalkey said he lived with his sister.

Bessie's family are seeking relatives of Mr. Chalkey as she knows so little about her father and would love to hear any stories that anyone might have. I’m also helping her to see if anything would come up.

Appreciate your help.

Hello Ching-ching
Bessie's dad and Mr Chalkley not being members of the the Manchester Regiment you may not get a lot of help on this site however all is not lost.  Have a look at this web site http://www.powtaiwan.org/ and contact them, my friend Michael Hurst (a Canadian living in Taiwan) will do what he can to help.
This is on page 28 of the list of men:  CHALKLEY GEORGE PTE. 1ST/5TH SHERWOOD FORESTERS (TC) (T6)

TC = Taichu Camp
T6 = Taihoku No 6 Camp.

You should find Bessie's dad in the list, you did not give us his surname so I could not look for him.

Hope this helps.
Let me know how you get on please. My father was held in Taiwan but in Heito and Shirakawa Camps.

Cliff

Hello Chiff,

Thank you for your information. Michael and I are friends too. Bessie also knows Michael. She came to Taiwan via Michael's society in 2010. I am not sure whether Michael knows about she searching for Mr. Chalkley. I'll ask him. Thank you for the advice!

Kind Regards,

Ching-ching

Hi Ching Ching
My name is Gilda Moncur and I am George Chalkley's daughter.

I refer to Bessie and Jen's efforts to track down relatives of George and as such have left a fairly extensive response on the Rootschat website which is where I believe their search began.I only became aware of their story very recently and responded immediately but I now realise they may not pick up my response as their messages are dated 2011 however, I remembered that I had also seen your message on this site and that it was much more recent, so thought that you may be able to alert them to the fact that they have found me and that I have left them a message on the Rootschat site.
That said, I also wanted to add that my father never married again and never had anymore children after the family he had with my mother. I mention this as I realised, after leaving my response to Bessie and Jen, that I had not made this clear and didn't want to get their hopes up that their might be other avenues they could pursue.I will of course check with my siblings if there are any other papers or photos which may assist them in their endeavours.
Thank you and kind regards
Gilda Moncur

Cliff, above your email is the email of the 'recipient' (in this case '[email protected]' 😊

The reason it puts your email is because it thinks you want to send an email to the recipient.

Hope this helps
