Thanks for the access to your site.I am 65 years old and  retired,a Fire officer for 30 years  with many happy years at London Road fire station and many more in Greater Manchester. My grandfather died in 1938 and was buried in Hurst cemetery with full military honours.A record was entered in the Ashton reporter at the time (i did see it as my late father had a cutting) His name was JOHN TAYLOR and lived in Wellington st east (Downshaw rd)Waterloo district of Ashton. Mentioned in the cutting was his service in the Boer war and 1st world war,it also mentioned was  the 2nd vb battalion. He returned safely and resumed his work as a miner at the "Honeywell" pit near Oldham. The only thing i saw as a child was his stirrups and spurs, but he was in the ranks. The colours of the 2nd vb are at Hurst church and i did enquire (pre tinternet) at Ardwick barracks ,that was years ago and life gets in the way.Any ideas which way i go on this. Thanks

Phil,

Just to clarify, your grandfather would have been in the 3rd VB Manchester Regiment which were in Ashton.  The 2nd VB were in Stretford.

Thanks for that, the only fact i have to go on really is the newspaper cutting that had him down as 2nd vb,although he was an Ashton chap. I suppose there would be no reason he could'nt have recruited at Stretford? The mention of him serving in the Boer war and then presumably going back to work after tends to make me think there maybe a link (stab in the dark) to his old comrades,a consideration when going back to the army...........did a reserve policy apply then for recall?
