Does anyone know who this young chap who is. Paul Reed tells me he was Manchester Regiment.

It seems Pte 376870 Samuel Barnes was the best bet.  Enlisted 10th Bttn 11/12/1915.  2/10th Manch. Regt. 4840 Pte., 1/10th Manch. Regt. 376870, 8th (Res) Manch. Rgt. 376870, Royal Defence Cps. 88299, 3rd Manch. Regt. 376870. Dischargerd SWB 31/7/1919.  His Pension Card says he had VDH, resident 17 Ripon Street, Oldham.  Samuel was born 1889, so too old to be the chap in the image in my opinion.  I will have another look at the other candidates.

Was this brave soldier in the Manchester Regiment,I am puzzled as he is wearing a lanyard,lanyards are worn by gunners and mounted soldiers,horse drawn transport and such.was a lanyard part of an infantry soldiers dress during the time of the great war.

Hi Arty,
I understand your point about the lanyard, but I'm no expert.  I wonder if he had a roll with RDC that may have led to the lanyard...  I hadn't understood how anyone had known the chap was in the Manchesters.  This is what Paul Reed said in 2005 "The only clues are his shoulder title, visible on the original, which is Manchester Regiment and that the photo was taken in Manchester"

Just curious Tim,regardless of who he served with to be awarded a MM and DCM he must have been a very brave soldier.
