Hi,

I'm researching my wife's grandfather and in 1902 he was said to be a member of the 4th VBMR. I have some questions I'd be grateful if anyone could help answer:

1) How do you find out if someone was actually on the VBMR? Is there an online roll somewhere?

2) I presume being a member is part time; what sort of [time and money] commitment would someone have to make?

3) The grandfather had a Lee-Metford rifle at home, plus a little ammo; did he break some rules or were people really allowed to do this!?

Hello,

There no unit rolls in existence to check.   There are other things to check if we knew who he was.

I have no record of an P. Taylor in the 4th VB .

Thats not to say he wasnt in it, just that I have never come across a mention of him.

Hi,

Back to this again!

findmypast has records of a P Taylor in the 6th VBMR serving in the 2nd Boer War. Can anyone verify if this is my Peter Taylor? Also, Peter was recorded in the 1901 census as being back at Hulme; would that be allowed (leave South Africa before end of war)?

Hello,

The P. Taylor that served in South Africa was as you say a member of the 6th VB Manchester Regiment.  He was part if the 1st Volunteer Service Company which served in South Africa in 1900 only and then came home.

However the 6th VB was based in Oldham, a long way from the terraced houses of Hulme and he would have had to pass the Headquarters of both the 4th VB, the 2nd VB, the 5th VB and the 3rd VB in order to get to Oldham and therefore is 99% unlikely to have happened.  VB's at that time were very much local Bn.'s for local people.

Do you have any photos of him? In or out of uniform?

That might help us .
