Hi, a relative has just received a copy of William Frederick Smith's Army record.
It quotes that he joined the Manchester Regiment on 3rd November 1928 and was
given a service number, 3523108.
His date of birth is listed as 2nd March 1901.
He joined for seven years service and five years in the reserves.
Is it possible that you might hold any further information regarding his service in
the Manchester Regiment?
Thanks
Geoff

Geoff,

Email the Tameside Local Studies library again, this time with that service number.

They will email you back the details of his entry.

They will find it immediately with the service number.

Further to reply No 10 by Mack, from his Naval Record:

His number and rate were J55440 Boy II, the J indicating he was in the Seamen and Communications Branch. Occupation - Errand Boy, height on enlistment 5'3/4". He served on HMS Ganges - the Royal Naval Training Establishment Shotley. All boy entrants were trained at HMS Ganges. His record states "Invalided, sequeloca csm (?), mental instability". His conduct and ability had been assessed as Very Good and Moderate.

Hi Sphinx and Charlie,
thank you for your answers.
I have contacted Tameside Local Studies library again and am awaiting their response.
I will also see what else I can find out about WFT Smith's Navy service during the First
World War,
