Greetings one and all!

Hope I'm in the right place?

I have two ancestors who joined the Manchester Regiment and fought in WWI.  One made it through and one, unfortunately, did not. My military researching skills are new born and I appreciate any help and guidance I may receive from the members of this illustrious forum.

My maternal grandfather, Edward Quayle (31047) signed up at Heaton Park in October 1915 and joined (F Coy?) the 26th Reserve  Battalion of the Manchester Regiment and survived the war; whilst my great Uncle, James Francis McGreavy (2205), was killed in action in March 1916 whilst serving with the 1st Manchester regiment in Loos, in France.

I have located some history via Ancestry.co.uk but would be grateful for any indicators from this group as to where to look next.

Many thanks and kind regards

Hi Orso,
You have some interesting research here and you've found the right place.  I had a brief look at James Mc Greavy earlier and found contradiction in the place he was killed.  Commonwealth War Grave data shows him to be commemorated in Basra and Soldiers Died in the Great War says Mesopotania.  http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1657536/McGREAVY,%20JAMES%20FRANCISWith this together we learn (again) that the National Roll is prone to errors. It does have leads on addresses and relatives though.  He was not Killed at Mons.

Because you have two men to research, you'll probably find it best to run two threads. One for each an man in the 1914-18 Section.

Welcome from me

Tim

Edit for confusion in the Middle East. Too absorbed with Machine Gun Corps in Gaza.  Sorry!
Following one Platoon and everything around them....

L/Cpl 2205 john, francis mcgleavy was killed on 8th march 1916 during the attempt to relieve the garrison trapped at kut.
it wasn't possible to bring in all the wounded on this date, and some were murdered by marauding arabs as well as the turks.
he was reported as died on or since 8th march

Many thanks for the replies, I am grateful. I did not want to mention the McGreavy death conundrum in my first post as I did not want to appear "too confused".

I will do as suggested and open up two threads. Thanks once again for the replies and I look forward to the upcoming research.
