hello
I collect and research medals, to no particular theme, but i do have 3 medals named to the Manchester reg, hopefully i can learn and get some help/guidance, and if i can help anyone I will certainly try.

I am currently researching Fred Lomas No 42301, 16th Manchester reg, enlisted 07.12.15 discharged 02.05.18, I have been very lucky in finding him in a casualty list in the July 1917 war Diary, he was wounded on the 27.07.17, but what I cant seem to see is to what particular action, it looks to me like they were getting prepared for some sort of attack as the casualty list on the 30th is even far greater than my mans, if anyone could help me I would appreciate it.

Thank you

I have attached the page were Fred Lomas is wounded, I have all of the 1917 July Diary, I can post it all if its of any help, Just let me know were to post it.
cheers

hiya BW.
welcome to the forum.

the 16th battalion was making nightly recons of sanctuary wood on and around the 27th july,in preparation for the attack on 31st,D.coy were in the support lines.
its only my theory so be a bit wary of it,five of D.coy were killed on the 27th,if they had been killed while out on recon, their bodies would not have been recovered, its likely those from D.coy were killed and wounded by shell fire, the MO and the chaplain were both wounded on the 27th.

hi Mack,
thanks for your reply, even though i have a copy of the diary and could see they were getting prepared for some action, I couldn't quite get my head around the scale of the casualties before the 31st. I collect medals and don't deal in them, so any information is great as it adds to the memory of the individual.
regards
Brian
