I am trying to get a photo of a lieutenant in my dad´s battalion who was killed on the Anzio Beachhead in February 1944. He died serving in the 2nd/7th Middlesex, but he was originally in the Manchester Regiment and was from Shore, Lancashire. His name was Lieutenant Fred Wallwork. Can anyone help or suggest anything?

He was certainly originally either 8th or 9th Battalion.  Killed in action  on 9 February 1944 whilst serving with the 2/7th Middlesex.   He was Mentioned in Despatches - London Gazette 11 January 1945.

Thanks for that Robert. Any details in the London Gazette by any chance?

Wendi

John you can check the Gazette yourself, it's online and easy 'cos Robert has given you the date.  Search the supplement  ;)

Could you post a link for that, please, Wendi?

Yeah, I tried, but of the five or six options, none seemed to take me there.

Go to Awards and Accreditation,  then WW1

Hope this helps!

But Lt. Wallwork was WW2. Is there still an online database for this?

Wendi

Of course! Just not under WW1  ;D

Glad you are so certain about that. The way your post reads, it looks as if there is a WW1 section (which you originally thought was relevant), which I can see as "WW1 notices". But I can see no WW2 section.
I have typed "Wallwork" in the search box and come up with nothing relevant. If you know of a shortcut to this page, as opposed to trawling through hundreds, I´d appreciate a tip.

Wendi

I still suggest you go to "Awards & Accreditation"

Insert Wallwork in Text Search box

Tick "Include Supplement "

"Publication date" choose 1st January 1945 to  31st January 1945

The result  I am looking at shows Publication 9 Jan 1945 Supplement 36886, Page 328

Good luck!

Thanks, Wendi. Your useful tips took me straight to the page. Sadly, there is no extra detail, but it´s nice to see Lt. Wallwork´s sacrifice officially recorded.
