Hello ,

I found this entry in the forum whilst looking for information about Sgt Thomas Hilditch:  http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?topic=276.0
In answer to the question originally posed by 'sphinx':

Hilditch Thomas of 25 Essex Street Old Trafford near Manchester died 1 May 1903
Probate London 21 May To Samuel Austin, mechanic and Thomas Stearn, porter: Effects £81 8s 6d.

Presumably his watch was amongst his effects as it came down the family line from Thomas Stearn who was married to Sgt Hilditch's daughter.
I was lucky enough to inherit his pocket watch and would be grateful of any information about his career in the Manchesters.
The watch is engraved:
2nd V.B.M.R.
1 Coy.
To Sergt. T. Hilditch
from
HIS OLD COMRADES of
No. 9
1863 to 1897
Hope you can help
