Joanne

Hello,

There is a fascinating amount of info on here and I hope someone can help me find out a little more about my grandfather, Harry Travis.
My Mum has his Queen's South Africa medal which states his service number as 7819. He served in the Manchester Regt but I don't know which battalion. The medal has the following clasps: South Africa 1901; South Africa 1902; Orange Free State and Cape Colony.
Harry is believed to have been wounded at some point, receiving shrapnel in one of his legs.
I am only beginning my research but this looks like a very good place to start.
I am hoping to find out which unit he was in, what action he might have been involved in and where he went after South Africa.
I know that Harry later went on to be a gamekeeper for King George V and I would be very grateful if anyone has any info or can point me in the right direction to find it.
Thanks.

Hi Joanne and a Warm Welcome to The Forum  ;D

Sorry, the Boer War is not my subject, but might be able to help with King George & the gamekeeper bit.

What area of the country do you think your grandfather settled in?  i.e. what land would he have "gamekept" for the King?

Joanne

Hi. Thank you for all of your replies. I am alittle confused though because i see that there are two replies saying my Grandad was in different Battalions. The 6th Militia Battalion and A company of the 2nd battalion. Could someone please tell me where i can get any information about my Grandad.
Thank you. Joanne

Hi Welcome, I think harribob said he had found a Travis in A coy 2nd Bn. That is one he has found listed. There are probably a few Travis'. Please bear with us we shall try to help you as best we can. If you can give us some personal details like where he was from etc. We can narrow it down quite a bit.
I apologise, I interupted the query with a silly comment. It is serious to us on here, its just that we had a nice happening for some of us last Friday. Some of us were feeling a bit giddy.
Someone will help you properly I am sure
kind regards

Joanne

Hi.

Thank you for you reply. I am led to believe my Grandad was born in Oct 1883. So in 1900 he would only have been 16 years old. I think he was born in Rochdale. He lived in Carnforth and Lancaster and my nanna was called Elise Williams before they married. I know my Grandad had a first marriage but i don't have any details about them. I know my Great Grandfather was called Harrison Travis. I have also been informed that it was Lord Shelton he worked for not the King. I have my Grandads medal. I know that he had a sword, but his son disposed of it years ago, which is a shame. Hope this helps and once again Thank you to you for all for all of your help.

Hi,
This looks like the family in 1901, Rochdale and Carnforth are mentioned but not in the way you think.
If it is the right lot, I can look for more on them.

  49 Mere St,Rochdale
Harrison Travis  40 Ulverston     Head Supt to Prudential Life Assn Co
Agnes A Travis  40 Lindal? in Furness Wife
Harry Travis     17 Carnforth          Son  grocers assistant
Alda Travis      15 Carnforth          Daur dressmaker
Amy Travis      11 Carnforth          Daur
Edward Travis  14 Carnforth          Son  grocers assistant
Doris Travis       5 Carnforth          Daur

Hi

Thank you Dave. I think that it is my family, or should i say my grandad's family. I know very little about them, so to see this information is brilliant. I am very grateful for your help. Any other information would be fabulous.

the H Travis in the 2nd Batt could be a different man, i think we should use the information Sphinx has given us

Joanne for a long time I have wondered about the 2 cousins a few years younger than myself and my brother. They were a girl Joan and a boy Harry and lived in Carnforth. My brother Alan and I were children of Doris Travis. We both emigrated from Coventry to Australia, he in late 40's and me in 1952. Alan sadly passed away in 1996. i would be happy to have some contact to be able to fill in some gaps. There are a lot of Harry (and Ted)Travis' it seems. Dorothy
