Help wanted to research my grandad

Hi my grandad private Harold Greenhalgh 4130602 died when I was to young to understand and appreciate him.we have received his service record which says he enlisted with the 9th batt but I struggle reading the handwriting he seems to have joined diff battalions during the war I can see he was in India/Burma for 3 yrs any help or advice would be really appreciated at his funeral somebody mentioned about being a Chindit I have no idea if this is true thanks stephen

Hi Stephen, welcome to the forum. As you have your Grandfathers service record you have all the answers .
If you are having difficulty reading the entries you could scan and post his record here and I am sure one of us would be able to help. His army number is one allocated to the Cheshire Regt.

Hi due to work commitments I haven't had much spare time to research could somebody tell me if it's poss to find out where and what the 2nd batt did during the 3 yrs June 1942-March 1945 thanks

The 2nd Battalion sailed from Scotland in convoy  in April 1942, arriving at Bombay during the first days of June. They were a part of the British 2nd Division. The battalion, less D Company, moved to Assam in March 1944. They then played an important role in the Battle for Kohima during April to June 1944. In April/May 1945 flew out of Burma to Calcutta, India.

There are two excellent book covering this period, both written by Lieut-Colonel Rex King-Clark.
The Battle for Kohima is now out of print but available through the library system.  The second is Forward from Kohima November 1944 - May 1945 iwhich is available from the museum website bookshop.

Hi Robert thank you for your reply this fits in with writing in a bible we have that has a date and Assam wrote inside it thanks again I will look into buying the books it's such a shame I wasn't old enough to ask my grandad about his past before he died I find it so interesting and I really am proud of him thanks Stephen
