Following themonsstar's introduction, I've been reading Manchester Grammar School Magazine and will post a few snippets of interest that are found. Mostly covering the Manchester Regiment but also other units that had paths crossing.

The first meeting for the formation of the Public Schools Battalion was 3rd September 1914. This was the 3rd day of recruitment of the City Battalions and somewhat explains why relatively few MGS men enlisted with the Pals. The article provides some depth on recruitment and initial training of PS Bttn

Ps pg 177 October 1916 edition shows:-"On the day that School re-assembled four captains of the 20th Royal Fusiliers celebrated their second anniversary in the \rmy. They were Templar, of the A Company, Maxwell, of the C Company, D. S. Hodgson-Jones, of the D Company, and F. Stewart Modera, adjutant. Just two years ago they had their great send-off on the Infirmary flags. The School was not forgotten in their toasts.

A former member of Oxford OTC and employee of Parr's Bank, London he died on 17/11/14

"He died as a good comrade, a good citizen, would wish to die, raising by his death a glorious monument for himself, and leaving behind his memory for us as one of our most cherished possessions."

He died of wounds in the Dardanelles on 23/5/1915.He was in the old Mounted Infantry Company, 2nd Volunteer Battalion and Manchester Yeomanry in the South African War.
"He was the senior captain in the [6th] Battalion, and was much respected personally, besides being a most trustworthy officer."
Commemorated at Lancashire Landing Cemetery

Also reported in June 1915 MGS Magazine  pg 96-97. Capt Hepburn was killed in action at the Dardanelles on 30/5/1915. He worked in his father's bleaching works at Ramsbottom where he became manager. He was made O.C. at Nicosia in Cyprus. He was 33 years of age, and leaves a widow and two children.

Captain Rose death in the Dardanelles  on 4/6/1915 was reported by MGS in June 1915 pg 97 as "A soldier of high merit, he was a singularly modest man, and self-sacrifice was a distinguishing feature of his character."

Lieut. Harold Thewlis, killed in action in the Dardanelles, was the only son of a former Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Frank Hamer was son of Mr. William Hamer, J.P., cotton spinner. He was captain of the Matric. team that won the Football Cup in 1896.
He joined the 9th Batt. Manchester Regiment in 1906, and promoted Captain in 1912. He was appointed 2 IC Turkish Prisoners' Camp at Mahdi. When the 9th Batt. went to the Dardanelles he rejoined his Battalion. He was killed in an attack on the Turkish trenches on June 7th.  He had been a member of the Ashton-under-Lyne Town Council and. a Chartered Accountant. He married, in 1907, a daughter of Mr. Franklyn Mallalieu, of Delph, Yorkshire, and leaves a widow and two young children (both boys).

Pte. Robinson was killed in the Dardanelles on June 4th. He was a Mynshull scholar, passing the Matric. In 1909 Prev. Employed with Messrs. Simpson & Godlee.

nb Numerous monthly obituaries now need to be summarised on one post. Not all entries had a Regiment specified and I've used CWGC to check these. It's possible some Manchester Regiment casualties slip through. William Evans is a possibility. Pg 136

July 1914 Edition - How?
"Mr. Henry Stephen, who has been elected to a Senior Research Fellowship, founded by the Commissioners of the 1851 Exhibition, of the value of £150 per annum for two years, intends to proceed to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry, Berlin."

Pg 165 of October issue confirms attendance of Lt P Blythe, Capt Woolam & Lt Renshaw at the Staff College, Camberley for a Company Commanders course. Likely to have taken place in July 1915. All three men were former pupils Commisioned in the 18th.
Some 17th Bttn Officers attended the same or similar course.
