Boer War shell case?

Attached are some photos of a shell case
that belonged to my gt grandfather (Bill Currie)
I'm guessing its from the Boer War
as it has a date of 1897 on it
It also has the wording "Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe"
Its about 9" long (ooh er missus)
wondered if anyone had any more info

You fail to mention that your grandfather was the renowned Bill Currie of both 1st & 2nd Manchesters.          A fine old soldier held by the Regiment with great respect and affection

The calibre is usually found stamped directly at the bottom, below the date.
I cant tell from the picture if there is anything there?

have previously posted in Boer war section about gt grandfather
He was my Gran's father, died when I was 4 1/2
but do actually remember him, doing the disappearing rabbit trick with a handkerchief
which fascinated me, and fly away peter,paul trick.
Also him eating some soup and asking him what he was eating
to which he replied "rat's blood" ha, ha

the only other markings I can see on it are Kp underneath 1897, what looks like AWS 1 stamped above Jan 10 date
and d36 at the top if this helps

7,7cm leichte Feld Kanone (l.F.K.) 96 n/A 1st Production Cartridge Casing Data

Height - 227mm (8.93 inches)
Actual Calibre - 7,7cm (3.03 inches)
Base Diameter - 91mm (3.55 inches)
Weight - .531 kg (1.17 lbs.)

Markings.

PATRONENFABRIK KARLSRUHE is the manufacturer of the cartridge case.
The twin flaming bombs between the manufacturers name is
standard for this manufacturer.

AWS stands for Artillerie Werkstatt Spandau who reloaded it
Jan 10 was when AWS reloaded it

also

KP stands for Krupp Essen who also reloaded it.

 1897 is the manufacturers date.

The d38 is (probably) the batch number ?

So would this have been from the Boer War then?
I googled about the 7.7 Kannon which was used in Boer War as well as WW1

Does anyone know about cleaning/polishing these?
Can you just use brasso or is it best to leave as is?

Hi Steve

The answer to your first question is I don't know
but
The shell was reloaded in Germany twice so
unless the Boers collected the shell and sent
them back to Germany for reloading I would say
no. More likely it was use in WW1.

There are other people that can advice on the
cleaning of the shell, but I would leave it as is.

How long did they normally store shells
I wouldn't want to be near a 17 year old+ shell being fired
