My grandfather enlisted in October 1888 in the Regular Army, when he was 18. He was at 'Home' for 2 years then in in September 1891 he went to India, for just over 4 years.

My question is -where is 'Home'  in these records, and secondly where in India did the Battalion serve.? His records reads thus=

Home from October 188 to September 1891
India  from  September 1891 to February 1896
Home from  February 1896 to October 1899
S. Africa from October 1899 to July 1901,   served as Mounted Infantry, medal bars show locations.
Home from August 1901 to October 1902

Later he served in 1914-1919 conflict and appears to have been in France.

thank you

Margaret,

Your Grandfather would have been in the 1st Bn and at " home" was in fact Tipperary, Ireland

In September 1891 a large draft of men including your G/F were transferred to the 2nd Bn in India, serving at Sialkot, Chakratta & Dinapore.  (you can google these places and see just where they are)

From 1896 to 1899 he would be in England, maybe the Depot at Ashton-under-Lyne or later at Aldershot with the 2nd Bn again.

regards

Margaret

Thank you for that info.

The service in India of the British army covered such a large area -I was never sure which parts he was in... I am making a collage of his life & times, so this is very helpful.
