George James Taylor 5284 Sgt 1st Battalion

Hello,

Could anyone help with any info on my Grandfather (George James Taylor)?  I have his paybook from 1897 and some certificates of education and military qualifications.  I know he fought in the Boer War and recieved the QSA and KSA medals which unfortunately were sold when I was a child.  (I would love to relocate them and buy them back!) .  I would particulary like to know which bars would have been on his medals as I cannot remember myself.  He was from Nottingham but signed up in Sheffield on 23rd Sept 1897 for seven years in the army and five years in the reserves.  His number was 5284 and he was eventually promoted to Sgt on 23/09/1902.  His service abroad included Gibraltar 10/2/1898 to 15/2/1898,  South Africa 23/8/1899 to  21/9/1899 and Singapore 12/3/1903 to 31/03/1903. 

Any information anyone has on him would be much appreciated.

the boer war isn't my field i'm afraid but i'm sure we can find out what clasps George was entitled to

Hi Julie - 5284 Pte. G.J. Taylor was in the 1st Battalion and had the clasps Defence of Ladysmith & Belfast on his QSA and South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902 on his KSA. His service papers may well be in series WO 97 at the National Archives in Kew.

Medal News magazine has a medal tracker feature for people looking for medals to specific recipients. An entry on their website (www.medaltracker.com) costs £5 with no time limit. They claim a 20% succes rate which I think is pretty high. May be worth a try.

Hi Julie-and welcome to the forum.Do you have your Grandfathers records ? If not,they are in WO97, as Ladysmith says and are quite extensive .
