Here is the information we have on Walter

20/26079 Walter Whiteley
Enlisted 5-6-15
Aged 19[CWGC says 17]
Service record says son of Walter,
CWGC confirms this, mother was Mary Helen
Occupation.collier
Resided 220 Hamilton Street, Collyhurst
Went over 9th November 1915
Admitted to hospital 16/8/1915 till the 19/11/1915 tonsillitis
Killed on 1st july 1916 with the 20th Manchesters

It is our suspicion that he comes from a Traveling Family and therefore does not appear on the 1911 Census.  We would like to confirm this and extend our information regarding him and his family.

Hi Wendi,
Just came across your post, I'm a relative of Walter Whiteley, my granddad was his younger brother, my cousin has Walters original war medals as well. Have done quite a bit of research on the family tree. You are correct, Walter Snr was a traveller so moved around and doesn't appear on the 1911 census.

Thanks
Neil

Welcome Neil and thank you for the confirmation.  I see Mack has added a little more.

Hi Wendi & Mack,
Thanks for the information, have found out quite a bit more about Walter, his sister and 3 other brothers, my cousin has written to Manchester Council to have his name added to the Middleton Road Cenotaph as Walter doesn't appear on any Cenotaph, only on his mum & dads grave at Philips park cemetery and on the Thiepval memorial.

Thanks
Neil Whiteley
