on 15th april 1917,the SS cameronia was torpedoed 150 miles east of malta,she was outward bound from marseilles to egypt with over 2500 troops,she sank in 40 minutes,the survivors were picked up by the two escorting destroyers or took to the lifeboats,but nine members of the 1st manchesters were killed or drowned.

It's interesting to note Pte 9204 John Singleton had been a member of XVII Pln, E Coy of 17th Bttn in Manchester, arriving France with Bttn on 8/11/1915.   There are relativley few members of 17th Bttn who transferred to 1st Bttn.
