arthur phillips POW
« on: March 03, 2008, 10:58:49 PM »
is there info on a arthur phillips
all i have on him is,that he gave up a rifle at dunkirk and later captured at singapore[i think], with the manchesters,he was from gorton.
arthur has passed away, and ime trying to find out some info for his son, whos a mate of mine.
when arthur arrived home after dunkirk, all he had on,was a pair of pants,a vest and a pair of plimsolls, his dad thought hed deserted, and gave him a bloody good hiding and threw him out.
the only thing that EVER bothered arthur about the war,was that he had to give up 2 rifles.

Mac
There were 2 Arthur Phillips in the 1st Bn Manchester's my father 3525679 Cpl he came from Glossop joined in 1932 and was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore.  See the Photo section Changi and Far East.  Also in the Bn was 3534680 Pte Arthur Phillips  The Nominal Role for Singapore says he came from Ardwick. He was also taken prisoner in Singapore and survived.  I contacted Arthur Lane recently who said he was a friend of 3524680 Arthur Phillips, at the moment I cannot find where I have filed Arthur Lane's message.  It would be worth getting hold of a copy of Arthur Lane's book "One God Too Many Devils" that is all about the 1st Bn.
