Hello.

I am looking for more information about my maternal Great Grandfather, William Henry Christy. He served in the 5th Manchesters TA originally in the Boer war as a Batman, and ended up as Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant.

Our family donated his medals to the Wigan 'Way we were' museum. He was awarded a DCM and MBE.

I have a copy of his medal index card for his DCM, and have found the notation in the London Gazette (page 58 issue 30450).

His DCM citation reads:
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and consistent good work on many occasions. (17.4.18)

Family rumour has it that his DCM was awarded for a specific event, rather than just everyday good service. Previous searches have come up blank however.

It has been some time since our family looked up his service record, and I was hoping members of your forum could help in tracking down more information regarding his service, in particular the events leading to his award of a DCM and MBE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michael,

His DCM was NOT awarded for a specific event.  It was awarded as per the citation you have quoted.

However,  The DCM citation is incorrect in one respect in that his DCM was gazetted on 1.1.1918 and not on 17.4.1918 meaning that the consistent good work on many occasions occured in 1917.

Are the medals on display?

Originally they were on display when the museum was first launched. I don't know if this is still the case.

Hi,
Do you have any photos of him?

Read my threads on John Aldred CSM of Flixton and on J Daniels in 1914-18 .

Jack Aldred, my grandfather,of 1st Batt, and your W H Christy were much the same age and both volunteers.I have posted several photos showing many Territorial NCO's-maybe you will recognise someone. :)
