My name is Rhys and i'm currently a serving member of the RAF. i'm on here as i am researching the family military history and in the last week i've discovered i have at least 3 relatives that have served in the Manchesters, Pte C Viner was in 1910-13, Pte J Viner was a possible Manchester draft to Canada then rejoined in 1914 and as yet unknown Jim Viner during WW2.

thank you for that! i never knew Eliza remarried after my great great grandfather died so thats why we could find a record of Herbert.

Mack; you are my new hero!

can't find a MIC for him however, just his service papers. he appeared to have served in Egypt, Palastine and Syria until 1920

i've also emailed the Royal Canadian Regt for any info on the soldiers form the Manchesters who transferred.

Thanks mack and tony

pierce09

Mack, found his MIC, his number is 323889 on it.
also has a number WR290518. not sure what this means.

to top it off, his brother, my great grandfather, James was ASC and RFA from 8-8-14 to the end of the war.

thanks very much for your knowledge! it's making my attempt at sorting a military history of the family alot easier!

my family tree shows that James Viner and Margaret Ward are my great grandparents. James' son James Anthony Viner served with the Manchesters in WW2 but that is a new search i will start at a later date!

so far, i think i have, James in RFA and ASC, John of 3rd and 2nd Bttn the Manchester Regt, Charles of the 2nd Bttn Mancs and Herbert Viner RE. i've still to start my fathers side!

since then, my grandfather, grandmother, father, 3 uncles, 4 cousins, my brother and myself have all served. i need to see if i can find any soldiers in the family before John and Charles (about 1906-07).

Thanks for all your help Mack. much appreciated

so after trawling Ancestry, i joined findmypast as well and found the militia papers for my great great uncles. Charles joined the 4th Bttn in mar 1910 and transferred to the 2nd in dec of that year. however, i cant seem to download the documents even though i've paid (all 16 pages downloaded are just the first page). aside from that, it says he was in Curragh, Ireland when he was discharged in 1913. does anyone know where i can read about the regiments' activities in Ireland between 1910-1913?

Thanks

Robert Bonner

Rhys,
The activities of the battalion between 1910 and 1913 are detailed in Volume Two of Wylie's History of The Mancheste Regiment.
Assuming that you are currently based in the UK, you will be able to obtain a copy through the inter-library lending system from your local library.

so as i'm now permanently based in Nevada, i just ordered volume 1 & 2 of the history and Lt Cmdr Bell's 1022-1948 volume as well.

to recap on the family so far;

Dvr James Viner joined around oct 1911 in the ASC, sent to France 8-8-14 and transferred to RFA approx Apr/May 1918

1989 LCpl Charles Viner joined 4th Bttn SR on 1-3-10 and transferred to 2nd bttn Manchesters on 8-12-10 to H Coy, promoted to LCpl 8-6-12 and med discharged 17-7-13 for as yet, unknown reasons.

2658 Pte John Viner joined the 5th (militia) Bttn on 20-10-05, transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment as part of a draft on 12-1-07. dishcharged at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 11-1-10 but re-enlisted 13-8-14 into 3rd Bttn and was sent to France to the 2nd on 21-4-15. suffered GSW on 2-5-15 and sent home 8-5-15. med discharge 16-6-16

finally

Spr Herbert Viner joined 14-1-16, served with 89th Light Railway Coy, RE in Egypt, Palestine and Syria and was discharged 23-3-20.

and just for interest, the WW2 relative is 3535131 Pte James (Jim) Viner, enlisted 30-5-40, possibly in a mortar section and transferred to reserves on 4-5-46.

if anyone can add anything to this or correct me, please do!
