Thanks for this. I had the honour of displaying Tom Cartman's scrapbook at a conference of school archivists last week. People were astonished at the story behind its discovery.

I just picked up the WD that 2/Lt Cartman joined the Bttn at Mansel Copse on 31/7/1916, for duty from 30/7/1916.  The other new Officers were 2/Lt Shapland & Wilks who had both been commissioned in S Staffs R.
Just a bit of detail...

Missing Photo Lt Hill MC
Probably Cecil Hill, listed 18th Bttn (M Stedman) for MC gazetted 26/7/18. "...valiantly held on to his sector..."
If anyone has information that Cecil was part of the 17th Bttn Roll, I'd be interested to hear.

2/Lt C Hill joined 17th Bttn and taken on strength 22/8/1917.  I'll report back if I find further reference, especially the deed for his MC.
Cecil was previously Pte 18143 in 20th Bttn. Commissioned 26/6/1917.

Wonderful group photo in France with US Sgt?
Seperate challenging project needed to identify these men and estimate the date.  20 officers on the role is about 10 short of the the full establishment, with some absent or on other postings.

The image above shows US officers, which may date the group photo to @ May 1918.
