Volunteer Battalion Medal

Does anyone know what this silver volunteer medal was for?
It is un-named and has a blank reverse.
On the front, below the Sphinx and "Egypt", it reads "VOLR BATTN" and below that, on the scroll, is written "Manchester Regiment".
The hallmark appears to be Chester 1898 but I may be wrong.
I have a feeeling it is probably for attendance as no sport is mentioned.
Any help very gratefully received.

Bob,

Out of all the hundreds of Regimental medals I have seen and owned I have not seen one like it.
Clearly a generic medal of the Vol. Bn.'s of the Regiment that has either never been issued or probably the recipienthas not been bothered to get engraved.

It could be for any number of Sporting achievements, military skills or attendance, from "singlesticks" to "signalling" to "shooting".
