Dear All,

I have just joined this superb forum having been recommended here by the good folks at the British Medal Forum where I have been a member for 5+ years.

I reside in the Isle of Man and am in the process of writing a book about the 1300+ Manx casualties of WW1, some of whom were indeed serving in the Manchester Regiment (36 that I am aware of, although undoubtedly there are others).

Whilst I may impose occassionally on the vast collective knowledge of the forum, I would also like to offer my services in return that I will be more than happy to look up any Manx soldiers (or sailors or airmen for that matter) that you may need info on as I have unparalleled access to local archives.

Meanwhile, anyone out there with knowledge or info on Manx lads, particularly casualties, PLEASE get in touch!

Regards, Dean

Hi Dean, a few months ago you kindly took a photo of the grave of William Pinder on the IoM for Neil Drum, which we used in our book 'A District At War'. So I'll gladly help if I can. You'll find lots of helpful people on the forum.

Cheers

Have you tried Geoff's search engine (http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/login.html)?

I put 'Isle of Man' into the search engine and it came up with 585 casualties from the IoM. I also searched on 'Isle of Man' and 'Manchester Regiment' and it came up 21 casualties:

Fletcher Watterson was my grandmother's eldest brother, died in Dorset, never made it to France. Went to visit his grave at the Holy Rood church near Wool, Dorset, last summer.
Would like to find out how he died, am assuming training accident.

From the Isle of Man Weekly Times, dated 7th November 1914:

"Word has been received of the death of Private Fletcher Watterson, son of Mr & Mrs W E Watterson, Grenaby Bridge, Malew who enlisted in Lord Kitchener's army some seven weeks ago, and was drafted to Bovington Camp, Woolwich. On October 12th he went with his company for an 18-mile march. On returning he was taken ill, pneumonia set in and he died 22 hours later. He was buried with military honours, the chief mourners being his Manx comrades in the camp, who are also erecting a headstone upon his grave."

No service records seem to have survived and he would not have been entitled to any medals as he had not been overseas. His family would have received a memorial plaque and scroll however.

I don't have a picture of him in my records but if I find one I will let you know. If you have one already, I would love a copy for my book project.

Skypilot, thanks very much for that.  :)

No picture of him I'm afraid. I have one of the gravestone if you'd like that.
