Hello from Oldham. RE Various relatives in the regiment.

Hi I am Nick 53 on a voyage of discovery having just discovered where I can start after being stuck at home with a fractured elbow and a very bad hip and researching my family tree. We literally knew nothing to go on a week ago. Will be posting 5 individual lines of research. But briefly seeking ANY info on my grandad HUGH HULME born 1895 1/10 Battalion later transferred to 1/8 and injured on night of 14th June 1918 blown off his post by a shell. He served in Egypt, Balkans, France from 1914 to 1918 and was in hospital in various locations Glasgow, Sheffield to his discharge in 1919. Found a service record in archives.

William Currie and John Currie my dads uncles both fatally wounded in Gallipoli 1915 one buried on Lancashire Beach and one in Malta both 1/10.

My other grandad Thomas (Tom Froggatt) was in the 6VB (Time expired?) prior to WW1 and then joined the 1/10s but transferred to 2/5 Cheshires and then the Middlesex Regiment but was discharged with eye problems I believe (Burnt Record) served at home in 14-19 but know nothing for sure as was a bit older.

Finally I have a Death Plaque (James Froggatt 1918) who I think is Toms brother but as Tom died when my dad was 10 in 1933 sadly very little info.

ANY pointers as to where to start gratefully received.  Must add what a great effort been put in by the moderators site admin great little site.

pte 28226 james froggatt of the 1st manchesters,was killed in action in mesopotamia on 5-11-1917,he gave his next of kin as thomas froggatt,10 ethel st,oldham,this is the same address that pte 943 william currie gave as his residency,william worked at platt brothers spindle works,pte froggatts address in 1917,was 12 limegate,limeside rd,hollinwood.
williams brother pte 1961 john currie,lived at 7 ethel st,oldham,william died in hospital at malta from a gunshot wound

there doesnt appear to be a john froggatt who was connected to oldham,that died in the war

WOW Thanks Mack !!!!! Spot on .... I should have gone to specsavers re John. (Trusted the wife ;-) It is James strikes a chord now although will have to be more carefull.

& Ethel Street was the Currie family home and Tom lived over the road at number 10 with my Gran and where my dad lived later born 1923. I am aware gran fought hard to stop her brother George being called up late on after William and John killed and lot of other sisters.  Irony dad worked at Platts as well for 26 years. With Toms mother and father dying very young the family was scattered from 1889 onwards and lived with extended family. James makes sense as couldnt find a John apologies for mistake. Grace A Froggatt, Charles W Froggatt just vanish of the census records and dad didnt even know of them until this week. A very different World. Thanks again. Nick

grace,ann froggatt married john kirwin and lived at 12 limegate,limeside rd,hollinwood,her brother james was living with them when he enlisted.
grace[nee froggatt]and john had a son called arthur,he enlisted in the RAMC as pte 117564 arthur kirwin on 14-4-1917 aged 18,worked as a haulage hand,he didnt go overseas,he was based at north dublin union barracks,dublin with the 327th field ambulance,he was transferred to classW army reserve on 16-10-18 and put into coal mining,he was discharged as surplus to military requirements on 26-2-1919
lived with his parents at 12 limegate,hollinwood
their previous address was 29 mona st,failsworth
grace died at oldham in 1941 aged 66

My goodness you are VERY good!!!!!!!! Thanks again. If you can track Tom (Thomas) born 7th Aug 1873/.....down you are a legend. He was in 6VB Manchesters but only up to late 1914. Then signed up with 10th battalion BUT MIGHT have gone straight to Cheshire Regt and Middlesex Rgt in Labour corp as was in 40s at time.

I have found he was diischarged from Nottingham on 17th Dec 1917  Believe he was 159034 Private enlisted 4th Sept 1915 other numbers appear to be LR/10135?

Dont want to waste anyones time but any info of help as dad was only 10 when he died in 1933.

tom states on his enlistment papers as time expired from 6thVB manchester regt,in 1908 the 6th VB became the 10th manchesters,when the war broke out,tom rejoined his old battalion,his service record could be on FMP.

FMP thats the one nick,his militia record could be on there.

tom rejoined the 10th manchesters on 4th sept 1915 as pte 3850,he listed his next of kin as his brother john froggatt,51 hollins rd,oldham,four days after enlisting,he married your nan at st.pauls church,oldham[8th sept]he transferred to the cheshire regt on 13th oct 1916,he ended the war with the 399th home service employment company
