Hi Peter
You earned it wear it.
I did not qualify as I was posted to Singapore during the qualifying period but was "Detached" to Gan after only 6 weeks in Singapore and returned to UK from there 12 months later.  I had spent 3 years as a boy with my father in Malaya 1951/54 so appreciate those who served there.
All my ex RAF friends who qualified wear theirs.

I may have missed something here - But those of us who served with the 1st Bn from 1951 to 1954 in Malaya are NOT entitled to the PJM according to the parameters set down by our government and also by the Malayan Government which I might add is a very sore point indeed, apparently it only goes to those there after 1957.
I hope that I am wrong but from memory I seem to recall a former campaign some years back from those there from October  1948 when it all started which failed to get any alteration in those regulations.
Insofar as wearing it on the bar with your UK medals I seem to recall that the only other medal allowed to be worn on the bar alongside campaign medals issued by the UK Govt. was the Malta Medal.

So long since I have seen Dress Regs/Medals I could be wrong, however.
Cheers,
George.

I'm too young to have fought with you Jungle Bunny puddle jumpers, but my feelings are if  a sovereign country wishes to give soldiers medals after helping them out in time of need, You should be entitled and proud to wear.

While I was serving in the British Army, dress regulations, stopped me from wearing two medals I was issued from two foreign countries, but now that I'm out. I am not tired by dress regulations, so I now wear two medals with pride.

A goodly collection, as you say wear them with pride, they are a great improvement on the 'stars' of 39-45 which came through the post to us.
Did I see one from the Oman or was it Saudi Arabia at the tail end?  The first one also seems familiar :D

Regards, George.

If you were awarded the PJM medal, as George rightly says, for services between 1957 and 1966 then if serving, no permission has been granted to wear.

If you are not serving, which I understand you are not, I cannot see the problem in adding a medal which you were awarded to your rack, just as themonsstar has done.  I think they look great.

I think what annoys people is the proliferation of self-awarded, privately produced medals that are appearing on the market (Normandy medal, National Service medal, Hors de Combat medal, Queens Golden Jubilee Commemerative  medal [not QGJM] British Nuclear Weapons Test Medal, Arabian Service medal, Active Service medal, General Service Cross - To name just a few) that some people tend to wear in abundance across, and up and down their chest.

Just my opinion.  I wear my medals with pride.

regards

Hi
Someone on here sent me an email asking where i served...afraid the email has gone AWOL and cant find it to reply so i will do it here
if its the correct place.

My first trip was in 62.At ward 10 Brunei General Hospital, the army had a ward there and a small MRS.
Then went to 8CCS Kluang and did a few patrols with the KOYLI/A&SH.
Was also with 16 Commonwealth Field Ambulance and finished up at the Cameron Highlands before heading  back to blighty.

In Borneo was in Long Samada/Long Acka....not sure of spelling the ole grey matter not the same these days....returned to UK 65.

Had another visit a couple of years later but thats another story.

Hope this helps.

Veterans to wear Malaysia Medal officially for first time
A History and Honour news article

7 Nov 11

British veterans awarded the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) Medal have been given permission by Her Majesty The Queen to wear it for the first time during remembrance events on Sunday.

The Government of Malaysia introduced the medal in 2005 and awarded it to British and Commonwealth veterans who served in the conflict in Malaya in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Approval is not normally given for foreign medals to be accepted if British recognition for a campaign has already been presented. Previously, veterans had been able to accept but not wear the medal. It has now been agreed they can both accept and wear the PJM Medal.

This was done to recognise the generous gesture by the King and Government of Malaysia, and their wish to award the PJM Medal in recognition of service given by many veterans in the difficult years leading up to and following Malaysian independence.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said:

"I am delighted that Her Majesty The Queen has given approval for veterans to formally wear the Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal in recognition of service given in the difficult years leading up to and following Malaysian independence.

"This timely decision is particularly welcome for veterans who will, for the first time, be able to wear this medal with pride on Remembrance Sunday."

Do they award it posthumously? my Dad would have been eligible. Not sure I'd apply or not as I'm 99% certain he wouldn't have bothered but might be nice to pass onto one of his grandkids

Yes they do.  Go to http://www.veterans-uk.info/medals/pingat.html and you will find all the information you need including a link to download the relevant application form as a PDF file. (The file is too big to post here).  The first page of PDF file does not open properly, it is purple. Click on the "i" at the side of the purple page and it opens fully.
