what battalion?
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:07:29 PM »
I am trying to find details of 58422 Pte John James Shipley. I know he died in France on 5th March 1919. I have his Regiment as 21st Manchester Regiment. How do I find out which Battalion he was in? Is there any way of finding out when he enlisted and can I obtain his service record?

Hi, his battalion was 21st:

SHIPLEY, J J

Rank: Private
Service No: 58422
Date of Death: 05/03/1919
Age: 23
Regiment/Service: Manchester Regiment, 21st Battalion.
Grave Reference:    IV. A. 27.
Cemetery:     CAMBRAI EAST MILITARY CEMETERY

Additional Information:

Husband of Susan Shipley, of Grange Cottage, Amcotts, Doncaster.

I haven't got access to the service records on Ancestry so I can't help with that one. Hopefully someone with access will be along soon. Many of the srvice records were destroyed in the Blitz in WW2 so it is a bit of a lottery whether they are available.

Hope this helps
Pete
