Hello Ladysmith,
Passed onto you by Wendi.
My question is :
Name:CONKIE, Robert
Unit: 4 Bad
Rank: Corporal
Number: 543598
Year: 1940
Volume: 3
Page: 283
Record source: GRO War Death R.A.F. All Ranks (1939 to 1948).
Could you help with what the abbreviation is 4 Bad
Cannot find any information on this abbreviation.
Thanks.

Having had second thoughts on the reply I posted I have removed it. There was a USAAF No 4 BAD at RAF Baverstock Wiltshire but that did not exist until well after Robert Conkie was killed in action.

Still looking for the right answer

Hi

I've read the information on WW2 Talk
Link
http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/37741-robert-conkie-raf-died-1940-a.html

No 4 BAD is no4 Base ammo Depot
Follow the link below to Roll of Honour – Rennes troop train bombing, 17th June 1940

http://www.lancastria.org.uk/Victim_List/Rennes_bombing_17th_June_1940/rennes_bombing_17th_june_1940.html

Go down after the list of soldiers you will see
Total: 78 with a further 99 soldiers who were identified after the bombing and are buried in Rennes Eastern Cemetery listed below:

CONKIE, ROBERT, R Corporal 543598 Royal Air Force 17/06/1940 Unknown Sec. 18. Plot 1. Row A. Grave 109.

Hope this helps

Looking at his movement card he was on No 13 Maintenance Unit at Henlow so was not with a Sqn.
Also No.2 Mobilisation Pool was at Henlow. Robert was at Henlow on the 16/9/39 with No 2 after this date he was next in France.

A little more information to add to Timberman's:

Henlow was known as the Home Aircraft Depot until August 1935 when it became an airframe riggers' school.  No.1 Wing trained machine tool operators and Fitter 1; No.2 and No.3 Wings trained flight riggers and flight mechanics.  By 1936 it was known as the RAF School of Aeronautical Engineering and included an MT Training Section and  a Pilotless Aircraft Section.  By February 1939, much of the training had moved to St.Athan and No.2 Mobilisation Pool was formed at Henlow, and No.13 MU had also been formed.
The Armamanet & Gunnery School at Eastchurch moved away in September 1939.  It had been there since April 1922 and its role as far as airmen were concerned, was to enable them to become armourers and to enable them to qualify for the Air Gunner's badge.
I hope this helps.
