My fathers connection to Man Regt ?

Hi I was wondering if maybe Capt Bob may know some info for me. My father was in the Royal Artillary in WW11. He always said that he was in the same as my Granddad. Granddad AKA James Buckley who is mentioned on here somewhere.

What got me thinking is that last week in Oldham my home town. The Colours were brought back to the Civic Centre after refurbishment. It stated in the article that they were later called the 41st Regt. This is why I am interested, my Dad was in the 42nd Anti Tank Regt. Some of his family were in the army as careers. His nephew Albert Booth was serving in Hong Kong we had a photo of him in white dinner jacket at a formal do. Would seem he was an officer by the photo. His son also served. Dad was always proud that it was a tradional thing.
Just wondered what the connection was.

The 10th Manchesters became the 41st Royal Tank Regiment and were unconnected with the 42nd AT Regt of Royal Artillery.

Consecutive numbers but different Regiments.

Sphinx is perfectly correct.  I thought that I had posted this to you yesterday.  However a gremlin must have stepped in.

10th Battalion The Manchester Regiment (TA) converted to 41st Battalion Royal Tank Corps on 31st October 1938 and renamed 41st Royal Tank Regiment in 1939.  A 'second line' was formed at Oldham in April 1939 and was numbered 47th Battalion RTR.  Both battalions were in action in the Middle East and at the battle of El Alamein.  After the victory at El Alamein the 47th, which had suffered appalling casualties, was disbanded.   The 41st were then equipped with flail tanks and became 1st Scorpion Regiment Royal Armoured Corps.

Later after an infusion of Sappers they became 1st Assault (Engineer) Regiment.  They then took part in the river crossing battles of the Italian campaign. After active service throughout the war they merged with 40th RTR (previously 7th Bn The King's (Liverpool) Regiment) and eventually merged with the Duke of Lancaster's Yeomanry.

Thank you so much for the info. I know Dad was in Italy N Africa as he was attch'd to the 8th Army. I have a pass giving him permission to drive either a Capt or Admiral of a US ship around. I will send for his records see what else he did.
