Roy Dawson-Savage

Hello all,

First day on the forum, green as grass and hoping some of the more experienced on this forum will be able to  advise me.

I am 73 years old and seeking advice about how I can access records of my Dad's military service in WW11.

His name was William (Bill) Savage and he was in the Manchester regiment during the second world war, I know he served in Burma and I believe that he did hold the 'Acting' rank of RSM at some time during that service, which I assume was from 1939 to 1945.

I never knew him very well as he and my mother Dorothy were separated shortly after the war, I know he was born on 13th Oct 1915 and I have records of his death in Blackpool where he was a Guest House Owner but I cannot trace his grave.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I assume the war office has records but I don't know how to go about asking them.

Thanks in advance.

Roy

Hi Roy !  Welcome to our forum

It is reasonably easy to apply for his service record from the MOD, although there maybe a wait to receive it.

You will need a copy of his death certificate, which I presume you have, and there is a fee of £30

Click Here to link to the pages from the MOD explaining how to, and to download the necessary forms.

Don't worry if you can not provide all the information required, just provide as much as you can.

Good luck and if you have any queries, don't hesitate to ask.

hi Roy,  and welcome to the forum, if you post details of your father death, i will have a look for you , i live in Blackpool, and close to the largest  cemetery in Carlton. tonyrod

Hi Tonyrod

Thank you so much for your offer of help, although, I have inadvertently mislead you, my Dad's death certificate says that we was cremated, (it actually says 'Causing the body to be cremated') which is a phrase that I don't understand as there is no mention of what caused the body to be cremated, its just odd. Consequently, what I am really looking for is a Garden Of Remembrance and, to that end I did in fact contact Carlton Cemetary and paid for a search (which also included Layton Cemetary) the result of which was no trace of either a burial or cremation of my Dad at either of those places in the year 1978 which is when he died. We have no 'Family grave' as such although my Grandad Savage is buried with his son John in Phillips Park Cemetary Manchester, so that is a non starter really.

My Dad had the Beverley Guest house No 4 Charnley Road, just behind the tower but I drew a blank there although everybody is very kind and as helpful as they can be.

My best guess is that his ashes may have been buried with his mother, (my Grandmother) but where that is I don't know.

Thanks for your kindness, it never ceases to amaze me how Kind and considerate people are.

Kindest regards.

Hi Roy,

Living on the coast, he may have had his ashes scattered at sea.

Were your grandparents' names Herbert and Annie?

Robert Bonner

Roy.
Welcome to the forum.  I have a very little information about your father.

A W Savage is shown in a list compiled in India,  following the 2nd Battalions return from Burma in 1945, as Private W Savage with his home address in Walham Green, London.  If you believe that this is him I will send you the full address.

Although he is not mentioned by name in the book you must obtain a copy of  Forward From Kohima - A Burma Diary which covers the activities of the 2nd Battalion between November 1944 and May 1945. Available from the Regimental Museum.

I regret that there is little substance in the rumour that he was an RSM.

Best wishes,

Robert

Hi Robert.

To the best of my knowledge Dad never lived in London, although he did put himself about a bit! Bill Savage must be the most common name on the planet, there are literally thousands of them going back to the first world war and before, but thanks for your input. I just put the RSM bit down because my Dad's brother told me that story, but he did stress that it was 'Acting', I was an 'acting Lance Corporal' for two years in Malaya but when I finished National Service and got my 'back pay' they paid me as a private soldier which peeved me a bit since the british army is run by lance jacks who eventually get done what the CO told the Adjutant to do!

Kindest Regards.

Roy

Thanks Mac, that is amazing, I ask about my Dad and find stuff out about my Grandad that I never knew. I knew absolutely nothing about my Grandad's army service, in fact I didn't know he had been in the army. Lavinia Jane was my Grandmother and I lived with them for several years at Beaumont street, which occupied ground that is now covered by the Manchester City Football Stadium.
Thank you so much for your help.

Kindest regards.

Hello again Grimmy,

Would you care to expand a little on Herbert and Annie/Annis, I am always looking for more information for my family tree and the names that you came up with seem to be more than coincidence, I would really appreciate your time to perhaps increase my knowledge of my forebears.

Kindest regards.

Roy.

Roy - I came across a marrriage between a Herbert Savage and Annie M. Stanley in 1913.

I think Herbert may be the same man whose death was registered at Fleetwood in 1952, aged 66.
